I've been noticing more and more profiles that check "Native American" for ethnicity.  I always thought that meant Native American Indian (or whatever the pc term is); however, the people checking the box are clearly NOT.  Enlighten me?

The question is not really stupid.  But people filling out their profiles may be really stupid!

They're most likely scammers from third world countries that don't realize the difference between American and Native American.  They also tend to be realllllly skinny because they also don't know how to do the metric conversion.

LOL!  Yeah, the skinny ones kill me but the ones I'm talking about have a picture of a "regular" Caucasian man...older or younger..and the grammar is fine so scammers didn't come to mind, but you could be right.

legally, you can be 1/16th native american heritage and claim tribal affinity if you can prove it.  my ex looks like his italian mother...but his grandmother on the other side of the family tree was cherokee, so he can claim.

to some people this is really important, to be able to claim something, so as not to be a "mutt".

Yeah, that makes sense.  I'm 1/16th myself but don't look it and don't claim it...not for any reason,  it's just not the largest part of my ethnic background.

As to why people check  'Native American' for their ethnic background when they so are not, I dunno.   Next time you see an example of it, why not ask them why they did it?   I'll bet the answers would be interesting.

I agree, simpleplan2.  "Native American" means exactly that - only one who is "native" to this country, the Indians.  Being born here does not make you a Native American.  Everyone who is not of Indian heritage is a 'native' of some other country,  *not*  this one.    'Polish-American',  'Greek-American',  'Chinese-American'... you get the idea.

And I must say, Native American men are   ~*~H-O-T!!!~*~.   Soooooo handsome.   I sure wish there were a lot more of them around.   But thanks to 500+ years of genocide, their numbers keep dwindling.

All I know is we have more Native American's here at CM than any other place I have ever been.  About half of them are really skinny and come from places like... New York, Ohio and the like.  I have never heard of those places... so of course have never been there... but I think I would feel very fat amoung them.  I wonder though... they seem to like cam's and I do wonder if it adds ten pounds to them...

None of the 'ethnic background' checks apply to me - this is why 'Other' is checked as my ethnicity (do you know what 'caucasian' actually means?). As far as I'm concerned, those boxes are bogus. But all the more power to you if you believe it is relevant.

Okay, so this is just for the sake of discussion since I always mark "Caucasian" only because the option of "European American" isn't offered.

How long do the "Caucasians" or any other ethnic group, have to live on this continent before the people of that race are considered "native" to this continent?  The only reason I ask is because even our so-called "Native Americans" have been shown by DNA to have traveled here from Asia via an early land bridge and are of Asian descent?  Even "Native Americans" aren't native to this continent if you go back far enough.  How long will it be before I can claim to be "native" to the place that I was born, and my parents were born, and my grandparents were born?

Again, not really looking for an arguement....just speculation and thoughts on the subject.

In my experience (as a white girl, who looks native haha, who was raised in a city where a significant percentage of the population is native), a lot of Americans, who are obviously not at all native american, claim to be cherokee. I know this because every single time I go to the states, about 5 Americans will ask me which tribe I am from, and then tell me that they're an eight/twentieth/sixteenth cherokee. Every single time. My native friends all get the same thing when they're down there. It's weird, here a lot of native people deny being native because it makes it makes it harder for them to get jobs, but down there it seems that everyone wants to be native.

The term used here for native people is First Nations, which is accurate. They were the first to settle in Canada. Either way, it's just a lable, who cares?

There's a kind of mystique associated with native American ethnicity. Strangely, the majority 'ethnic' group in America today is... German (about 15%, which is quite a lot).

Yes, in fact, I do know what it actually means; however, I also know the word's connotation and was using it in that context.  Don't know if it's relevant...just a stupid question like I stated at the beginning.

according to some sociologists, the desire to claim "native" status stems from a desire to separate themselves from the people (their ancestors)  that committed the genocide. By claiming kinship with the "victims" they absolve themselves of of guilt and blame. Also they get a sense of belonging where they are, rather than where their parents/grandparents came from. The majority of people who are actually tribal tend to try to pass as something else if they can because of discrimination.

As to how long  you have to live on a different continent and breed only from people who are also on that continent, well biologists and ethnologists suggest at least 4 thousand years for a distinct phenotype to emerge with a unique culture and language.

I say call yourself whatever makes you happy, just don't expect others to agree.

Also national pride and all that. Americans are a fairly jumbled up race and people dont like that much (oh us Brits are no better, bang on about being thankful that we dont speak german when pretty much all of us haver germanic roots)
