Sanity -> PRAVDA: "Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age" (1/11/2009 8:41:39 AM)

Here are a few excerpts from an interesting three page article:

quote:

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.

<snip>

The graph of the Vostok ice core data shows that the Ice Age maximums and the warm interglacials occur within a regular cyclic pattern, the graph-line of which is similar to the rhythm of a heartbeat on an electrocardiogram tracing. The Vostok data graph also shows that changes in global CO2 levels lag behind global temperature changes by about eight hundred years. What that indicates is that global temperatures precede or cause global CO2 changes, and not the reverse. In other words, increasing atmospheric CO2 is not causing global temperature to rise; instead the natural cyclic increase in global temperature is causing global CO2 to rise.

<snip snip>

The reason that global CO2 levels rise and fall in response to the global temperature is because cold water is capable of retaining more CO2 than warm water. That is why carbonated beverages loose their carbonation, or CO2, when stored in a warm environment. We store our carbonated soft drinks, wine, and beer in a cool place to prevent them from loosing their ‘fizz’, which is a feature of their carbonation, or CO2 content. The earth is currently warming as a result of the natural Ice Age cycle, and as the oceans get warmer, they release increasing amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.

(Full article here).

The article raises more than one question - the biggest one being, does this mean that Russia is gearing up to completely dismiss all our "Global Warming" mantra, in order to forge ahead with their industry while we in the rest of the Western world consciously strives to choke all of our remaining industry to death?

Lol..I personally like soemthing as opposite against the global warming theory.
Afther many years we have a winter again here with very low temperatures...lol..and now no one talks about global warming anymore.
I guess..when we get a warm summer again...global warming will be in the news again

Ha, Ha, I saw Al Gore on the tv last night expectorating his usual drival about "global warming."
He calls the people who don't believe him or "global warming", "non-believers!"
Now where have we heard that term before?
Funny, Al bought himself a 100 foot Yacht last year.

Good article, I was leaning more toward the warming of the planet being just a cyclical phase all along, this would seem to support that notion. As for what is right & what is wrong...I'm guessing none of us here will live long enough to find out.

Jeffery Glassman's thesis wrt the Vostok ice cores has been debunked.

More good articles Hippie.....looks like the scientific society is having a debate on a global scale....lol.

Sanity -> RE: PRAVDA: "Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age" (1/12/2009 6:09:52 AM)

What do you think I wrote, Hippie?

Why don't you go back and have a look, and then try addressing THAT if you're still feeling froggy.

Here's what I said - "The article raises more than one question - the biggest one being, does this mean that Russia is gearing up to completely dismiss all our "Global Warming" mantra, in order to forge ahead with their industry while we in the rest of the Western world consciously strives to choke all of our remaining industry to death? "

I didn't write anything about Jeffery Glassman or the Vostok ice cores
because the cult of Global Warming has already been beaten to death in this forum... and while it's common knowledge that China is ignoring all this Chicken Little hysteria (and profiting enormously while we choke our industry back), it is news that Russia is printing articles in their state newspaper that signal their intentions to follow the example of the Chinese and allow their industry to continue unhindered, or unpanicked by the Greens.

Do the Chinese know they're ignoring their environment?

"China risks environmental disaster"

China's coal addiction...

"Expanding deserts swallow almost a million acres of land every year, China's Environmental Protection Agency says. Soon, 40 percent of China could turn into scrubland, creating enormous social, economic and ecological challenges, including the problem of millions of "ecological refugees."
"Across China, more than 200 million people are suffering from the health and economic impacts of desertification. Breathing and skin disorders caused by the dust are on the rise, and falling crop yields are lowering incomes. Officials estimate that desertification is costing China $7.7 billion a year, and about 4,000 villages have been entirely swallowed by the encroaching desert and wordlessly stricken off maps. "

"Not only is China one of the world’s twenty most water deficient countries, but irresponsible corporations and slack government has made water pollution highly prevalent in China. Today, as much as 70% of all rivers, lakes, and reservoirs in China are affected by water pollution, and with each passing day the situation only gets worse."

Thank you for making my point about China for me, Hippie. You're on a roll! That's part of the parcel I was pointing out - China is going to use all the oil we do not, so conservation of that resource on our part will have absolutely no effect on the environment in any form (whether you buy into "Global Warming" ideology or not), and everything else that we do to strangle our businesses in the name of "going green" will only serve to make us go bankrupt while China happily runs the industrial table.

So far as the ownership of Pravda is concerned, think as you want. They're still what they always have been... but that's a different debate.

I point out that China is on the verge of environmental collapse, and Sanity thinks I made a point about using oil.

Clue-by-four time: China CANNOT sustain its previous growth. Why? Uh, read the links. Sorry, no links to Pravda.

Amaros -> RE: PRAVDA: "Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age" (1/12/2009 8:31:17 AM)

I say be prepared for either, whichever way it goes, it's not like flipping a switch, adn between the two is climatic instability.

For the record, (striving) "to choke all of our remaining industry to death" generally tends to spur innovation that increases rather than decreases economic activity, and the whining about the status quo amounts to economic Malthusianism.

The Automobile industry thrived after CAFE standards were instituted, and the empirical historical data overwhelming indicates that adaptation and change results in economic growth, while authoritarian efforts to maintain status quo result in economic stagnation and eventual collapse.

We are, after all, ourselves the product of climatic instability.

You won't mind a little sarcasm, wiil you? OK, good.

Yeah, right, China is going to have enough water to turn their new deserts back into arable land AND feed 1.6 BILLION (in a few years, if they don't choke to death on the sand) AND maintain their rate of growth WHEN THEY ARE ALREADY SEVERELY SHORT OF WATER? Okey-doke.
