With my 50th fast approaching members of my family have floated the idea of sending me on a cruise(singles?).Having never before taken such a trip...I was hoping to take advantage of the combined wisdom of the good people here.Any advice tips would be appreciated.

Not a lot of advice... but I do know some cruise lines are set up for family and some for singles. I went on a Carnival cruise for singles and it was great. I'd see a travel agent and let them know what you are looking for on your cruise.

Get a motion sickness patch from your doctor and put it on before you start the cruise.  I understand that is the best way make sure you don't get ill.

Is there a test for claustrophobia [&:] ? Can you get immunized against white polyester bell bottom trousers? And are you allergic to canned muzak?

A better way is to just stay home.  [:D]

So you're suggesting I cut my own throat before boarding?

*Tweak* for even THINKING of asking such a horrible, horrible question [8D] .

I hear cruises have much improved in recent years: the idea has never rocked my boat (gettit? gettit???), but why not? Get on the ship, and ride that wave :-) .

Check out TripAdvisor.com and some of the other travel sites with reviews before you book that ticket.  Periodically there are problems with food poisoning or flu on cruise ships.  Bring any daily medications you will need along with OTC remedies for motion sickness, stomach trouble and cold/flu.

Set up an account with the purser for onboard services… That way you don’t have to tip for every drink… a gratuity is automatically deducted and charged to a credit card… You can either keep the charge on your card or pay in cash at one time before you disembark.

Lots of free food onboard but drinks of all kinds are extra… But if you pay attention they have free drink parties from time to time.

Most all cruises have masquerade parties so you may want to take a costume. You may also need a coat and tie for everyday dinners and Captain dinners but that formality changes from ship to ship.

If you want to make a little money see if your ship will have horse races…If so you can buy a horse, decorate it and get people to bet on you and you get a portion of the take.

DON”T pay extra for a big room with windows and balconies… you will not spend that much time in your room… too much to do.

Lower center rooms are better if you are prone to seasickness.

DON”T freak out the first time you flush the toilet in your room.

They make an ungodly sound... you think your butt will be sucked into the toilet.

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise Advice,experience's (1/8/2009 7:49:54 PM)

LOL okay thanks for that Butch,you seem to be a font of information....hehe.

kdsub -> RE: Cruise Advice,experience's (1/8/2009 7:53:33 PM)

Your big tips will be to your room steward and headwaiter. Sometimes they are a set rate… other times up to you so it depends on the ship but they range around a $125 if I remember right… things have changed I’m sure since I was on a cruise.

I recommend that you take me with you! hehe

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise Advice,experience's (1/8/2009 7:59:13 PM)

Now there's advice that I can wrap my arms around.Though to be fair, Lockit I should wait till all the recommendations are counted before deciding who I....I mean who's advice I take.

Lockit -> RE: Cruise Advice,experience's (1/8/2009 8:01:53 PM)

ROFL!

slvemike4u -> RE: Cruise Advice,experience's (1/8/2009 8:18:16 PM)

To tell the truth it is the "single" aspect of the whole thing that gives me pause.Memories of old Love Boat episodes are running thru my mind and this is not a good thing.Masochist I might be,but this Love Boat shit isn't my thing.....That annoying bartender....and the purcer who grew up to be a Congressman....*shivers down my spine*

Have no fear... the girls go wild on these singles cruises... most don't know each other and know they will not see each other again ever.

Good for you mike, I think you should go for it!
I hope to take at least a 3 day cruise to nowhere this year.

I have never been on a cruise, but I know many that have.
Personally, I would be careful about what I ate on the ship.
I would avoid a lot of raw foods, the salad bar, etc.
I don't want to depress you, but you might want to check this link out.

Cruise Line | Scared Monkeys - Part 2

Health Outbreaks at Sea in 2007

Just stay the hell away from raw food and the salad bar.

I have been concerned over all the people that have "fallen" overboard lately!
Don't stand close to the rails late at night, or when you have been drinking.

Don't stand next to people you think might push you over the rails!
[:D]

Seriously, there are soooooooooo many different types of cruises.
Here is a cute link you might want to check out.

Cruise Addicts - Cruise reviews, message boards, photo galleries, news and deals

A co-worker went on a cruise last month, and I need to get some details from her.
She told me she planned to rest the first day, and order room service.
I asked her if room service was included in the price of a cruise,
and she said yes room service is free!
With everything included I think cruises are one of the best ways to travel.

Have a great time mike.
Have you looked into any "kinky cruises" or "nudist cruises"?
Where do you plan to leave port?

Keep us updated.
