smiddenkidden -> Snacks you can't imagine living without (12/28/2008 12:56:07 AM)

This week a friend of mine from Canada and I (from the US) are having a snacky box exchange.  He puts in smarties, toffee, kinder suprises, ketchup chips, etc...all the things I love but can't find around here.

sooo, here's my question.  what are some american snacks that canadians love?  what should i send him?  anything you have trouble getting in canada but love so much?  what would YOU like in a care package from the states?

i need ideas people!  and i think you're just the group to give them to me!

I don't know but I know ketchup chips scare me:p

I don't eat meat so I can't really vouch for their deliciousness, but I know whenever my dad goes to the states he obsesses over those slim meat stick things with the name that I currently can't remember. I know it's an easy name and trying to remember it is going to ruin my night. And although I don't think there are any Trader Joes' in ND, if there is one, two buck chuck!! That stuff is awesome. I know some Canadians who prefer the American kit kat bars, I prefer the British and Canadian versions though. Mexican coke/pepsi is good and impossible to find here. That might be hard to find in ND too though...Damn, the only things I've ever bought in North Dakota have been the Tropical Punch flavoured Fuze (AMAZING, and non-existant here) and retarded amounts of stuff at Bath and Body Works, sorry I'm not more help.

Lastly, I had no idea America didn't have kinder suprise. I am very sad for all of you.

I don't think they have a name...but tthey are balls with a bounty like filling (coconut) and covered with chocolat.
I buy them here in the nuts/candy store. Bloody addicted to them. That is why I always use the entrance that is not so close to that shop..lol

I never heard of "ketchup chips" or "kinder surprises".  I had to look them up.  Ketchup chips seem to be potato chips with ketchup flavoring.  Well that sounds disgusting, but m'kay.  Kinder Surprises seems to be some kind of chocolate candy.

Now on to my favorite snacks:

-Fritos and bean dip
-Frito pies (Fritos covered in chile con carne and melted cheese for all you foreigners)
-Cheetos
-Whoppers (chocolate coated, malted milk balls for all you foreigners.)
-chocolate covered peanuts (a variety of them, including peanut M&M's)
-peanut brittle
-tortilla chips and guacamole
-pork rinds (I think the Brits call them pork scratchings).
-salt and vinegar potato chips
-ritz crackers with a variety of accompaniments (sardines, tuna, vienna sausages, many different cheeses, butter, etc.)
-popcorn with real butter.  (I tend to avoid microwave popcorn, but I don't completely eschew it.)
-Crackerjacks (of course just a popcorn derivative, but what red blooded American doesn't love Crackerjacks?)

Kinder Surprises

Original german I think ..and here (neigbour country Holland) also very popular. It is a a chocolat egg (fake chocolat>cacoa fantasy) filled with a plastic egg containing a supprise. Mostly an action figure...or other small toy.
Chocolat and presents..always rock :D

Oh I forgot to add cornbread and buttermilk.  I eat that for breakfast a lot.  I love it.

you can get kinder surprises here, at least in Los Angeles, just go to a more "international" food market and they have them.  in case anyone was looking [:D]

oh yeah, and I sent some corn tortillas to a friend in Germany once, don't know if those are a hot commodity in Canada.

monywildcat -> RE: Snacks you can't imagine living without (12/28/2008 7:59:22 AM)

Okay, I have never been to Canada, so I am not sure what is inaccessible, but here are some of my faves...

Slim Jims.  Those skinny meat things.  Yum.

Flaming Hot Cheetos.  I don't personally like them, but there are some in this house that do.  I like the Jalepeno Cheddar flavor Cheetos.

Jelly Bellys!  I nearly squeal with delight when I get a cotton candy, or a popcorn flavored jelly bean.  Go for the mixed flavor variety.  A little surprise in every jelly bean flavor!

Junior Mints.  The not-quite-mother-in-law got me some Junior Mint flavored lip gloss in my Christmas stocking this year.  Yay!

And Pocky.  Little biscuit-ey sticks dipped in chocolate.  Not an American snack, they are from Japan, but still my all-time fave, and one that I grew up with.  God bless my Korean mom for providing me with such tasty little Asian treats!

Yes we do have jelly beans here and if you go to a specialty candy store then you can get gourmet jelly beans in a wide variety of flavors.

Canada's version of Slim Jims are Hot Rods which are sticks of dried spiced meat sticks. They are quite good too!

Any grocery store and corner store carries Junior Mints!

These are STATE Favorites.

Andy Capp's Hot Fries

Gummie Worms (Although I recently discovered they are mostly made in Canada)
S'Mores Candy Bars
ASTRO Pops (The Sucker ones not the IceCream)
Pringles
Candy Necklases
Ring Pops.

Aynne88 -> RE: Snacks you can't imagine living without (12/28/2008 10:34:02 AM)

ketchup chips are way popular in New England. I had no idea they even had them in Canada until I clicked this link and the home company is Canadian!. Anyway, you can easily get them here.
