Censorship seems a simple enough matter - there shouldnt be any.

But then we have to consider that a good proportion of the population are pretty dense and easily manipulated; what we as a self selected sample of intellectual types might see as risque or in poor taste, but acceptable as expression can be interpreted very differently by that less enlightened portion of the people and they can be strongly affected, even motivated. Unfortunately, age is no guide to susceptibility or resistance to such.

We all like to say tha censorship is bad, and we like to decry the government for it's intrusiveness.  But I got news for everyone; the government didn't just decide on a whim to do this.  Our own fellow citizens are the ones that demand it.  If you don't believe it, take a look around.  We have religious groups of every stripe, and I do mean every stripe (not just the Abrahamic rooted faiths) bitching about immoral content in the media, stereotyping of their particular faith, blah, blah.  We have minority groups from ethnic/racial to sexual orientation related  groups screaming for censorship of any form of media they believe stereotypes them.  We have students on college campuses disrupting speeches, destroying media, and generally acting like infants towards anyone that disagrees with them.  You all know what I am talking about.  From the Left and the Right, we get this childish crap.

The government is us, and we citizens as a whole demand this shit.  Well we're getting it.  We can pretend that some evil shadow government is responsible, but that is a flat out lie.  The oppressors are us, and we get what we ask for.

Okay, so parental control of childern's behaviour online isn't always a practical proposition.

But there again labelling certains sites as verbotten can be downright dysfunctional. In the U.S. some record companies agreed to the demands of some folks to put warnings labels on heavy metal LPs. Result: increased sales to minors.

These sorts of labels often simply entice kids to watch content they otherwise would have had no interest in.

Nope, the government is not us, they are supposed to represent us, well at least we elect them to serve our needs, but as to censorship, when was the last poll taken as to what we want to see, or is that another case of it is assumed we need it, so we get it ?

Often it is those we elect to act for us in a place of government assume too much and it is often they do not speak for those that elected them. Fine, they fail to tow the line as to the electors, don't let them have power again, but that is too late, once laws have been set in motion.

Here in the UK, there is no set line that artists can work to as regards what is acceptable and what is not, aside from the obvious choices of any signs of sexual arousal, an erect phallus being one of the biggest no no's, in that instance, like why, why is an erect phallus so obscene, when it is the beginning of life in nature.

The line that censors use, if there is one, has been described as a wavy line, for often movies escape suitable certification, but others do not, even when the original content is not as severe in the censored production, often it has been suggested that censorship happens purely down to the censors taste. The so called video nasties, when released from ban a few years ago, were found to be tame in comparison to many major blockbuster movies.

I understand, perhaps certification has to be allowed, i.e. whether something is suitable for mature viewing only, or other, but I do believe these censor bodies have to be publicly accountable, in that they censor a piece of art, but it can be disputed and looked at again with a fresh set of eyes and mentality, remembering, these bodies were actually set up to serve the people, not prohibit the people.

Fine, certificate art, but do not chop it up, cutting this and that out, let us observe art in it's entirety.
