Alexis is recently DXed with diabetes and folks have been give us candies and sweets without any concern for her health!  I am the only one eating them and I am trying to lose weight as it is.  Next to putting up a giant sign saying "No candies, doctor's orders!"  What am I suppose to do, keep eating it as a courtesy to these well meaning but clueless folks?  It just drives me nuts!!!

Ohhh...divinity with pecans...I am so weak...

Any friends who are told of the condition, I am sure would not send sweets, or would understand why the refusal---someone has to speak up.

Don't give in!!  Back away from the boxes of candy.

If there is a homeless shelter near you, you might see if you can donate the unopened boxes of candy.  Or, save them to take in to work, which is what I do.   Well, if I can resist temptation.

I agree, people can be so inconsiderate.

I remember when I was leaving a Christmas night shelter and staff gave me about 24 packets of chocolate cookies. I couldn't offer them to anyone else as we'd all been given chocolate cookies throughout the week and nobody wanted them.

Then I had an idea. I sneaked into a shop and while the staff weren't looking I placed all the packets of cookies on the shelf among the other cookies and walked out, leaving the cookies on the shelf.

It isn't their responsibility to keep your health issues in mind, it is yours. Give it away. Stick it in the freezer and give it away in a month when the soup kitchen will appreciate it. Freeze it and give to people for Valentine's Day. If this is your biggest problem, then count your blessings.

Oh nice! Then we'll have all the homeless on sugar highs so they can get more handouts!
"Hey Ralphie, I collected $55 yesterday after eating eight Kit Kat bars!"
Oh yeah, then the homeless will be turning diabetic!
Great idea!
Hey I know, let's give them hand grenades and guns so that they can rob banks instead!
"Candy! Candy? We don't need no stinkin' candy!"

On second thought, send it to Popeye.  He could use a bit of sugar.

I would give to the homeless but we don't have a shelter here.  They are in the county north of us and frankly where they're at is in a bad section of Fort Worth.  They don't allow me to carry my swords for protection.

I would send some to Popeye, but I want to present them in person...lol!

I guess, don't be offended by it, chocolates are a pretty common gift and to someone who doesn't know or isn't thinking to a great deal about what to give you it just means they cared enough to give you a gift.

You can either make them aware of your situation, maybe say it in passing as to not offend them and make you seem ungrateful.

Or you can just carry on like nothing happened, you don't have to eat them :) try and resist.

Next year hint to wanting anything chocolate to be given, suggest that it be carob instead. No sugar, sodium, lactose and very low in calories.

Thank you for remind me of a memory.
Having very few friends here, had one friend that was diabetic. He is no longer with us, but I do remember using carob to make him a black forest cake. He told me that at no time has anyone gone to so much trouble to give him such a treat. The following year, I made pecan pie for him that he again thought that he did not deserve it.
Even mistress and master were impressed with me and approved of him coming over for a visit.
I do miss him greatly.

Oh sure, like they don't have enough troubles with *no teeth!*
Bring them some "fireballs" and other HARD candy and watch them cry because they can't eat it!
You guys are just cruel!

Why not give them to a friend or family member if you don't want to donate it to a shelter?

Diabetics can eat candy so the people aren't being that inconsiderate.  Sugar does not make you diabetic.
Everything is in moderation.

having spent six weeks in a nursing home this summer after surgery, yes, the candies would probably be very much appreciated by those older folks who are able to enjoy such treats, even if all they can do is suck on a hard candy.  it would be a special treat considering the usual diet.

i don't get it....(but then, come to think of it there's a whole list of things i don't get). The people giving the gifts are doing so to be nice, yes?  That does not force you to be held at gunpoint and eat it does it? Do you have no neighbors? Do you have no friends? Do you have no family? Do you have no churches? No police stations? No hospitals or doctors offices? i don't know why people get so uptight about giving someone who is diabetic candy. Where is it written that someone with diabetes can not have candy? Everything in moderation.......

POLICE STATIONS!
Give THEM candy or beer?
That'd be like putting Orson Wells in charge of the twinkies!
