I will try not to irritate you too much then. Mind if it gets to the point it might need another chew, perhaps we should rename you  Darcyandthefly

A blender will puree any food. We used them in the nursing home to feed the elderly with swallowing problems.

Ham, turkey, dressing, gravey, etc.... can all be blended where you won't have to chew a darn thing. After blended, you can scoop it out like potatoes and have a nice presentation on your plate.

Blend your favoriate pie with Ice Cream, Milk, Yogurt, or product of choice to enjoy desert.

Oh god, been there many a time.  The worst is spaghetti.  When half blended, it's just...  uh...  yeah, not pretty.  >.<

But yes, as awful as it sounds, it really is not a bad option.  My mother had to be on a blended diet for quite a while after an anestetic procedure gone a bit awry and screwing up her throat...  Doesn't look pretty, but tastes fine.

When I had my wisdom teeth pulled, I spent my recovery with whiskey and procribed fioronal.  It was a lovely time.    Of course,  I was a lush with a love for prescription narcotics at the time.  I don't advise it.  It's fun, but the repercussions aren't.  Do what your Doc tells you.

I too am surprised your dentist just let you do home if he suspected a dry socket, the fastest cure for that is like mentioned above to recut it and pack it and give you pain meds. Sounds like you need a different Dr.

Actually, I do have pain meds (Lorcet 10's). I've had them since the day the tooth was pulled. The problem is, they knock me out and I work nights, so I can't take them while I'm at work. My dentist packed the socket Thursday right after pulling my tooth and took the packing out yesterday (he had long tongs so I didn't have to open my mouth very far). He asked if I wanted more packing and I said no. I thought packing stuff in there would stop the socket from healing shut and that it would probably heal faster without the packing. Am I wrong? Besides, I don't think I could have opened my mouth far enough for it to be repacked anyway because of my jaw.

Also like fangs mentioned, the blender is your friend, while it might not be the consistency you can be creative with whats fixed , mashed potatoes, gravy, even the meat can be blended.

The blender does sound like a good idea. Maybe I can pretend to be a baby while I'm at it to give Sir a good laugh.

If you have dry socket, chances are he will have to re-cut the area so it will heal properly

Not necessarily.  When I had two impacted wisdom teeth removed together, I ended up with a dry socket too.  I went back to the oral surgeon who cut them out and he put a really thin gauze strip dressing in the socket.  It really helped with the pain.  Also, try what Termyn8or said...chew small amounts slowly on the unaffected side.  Go back to your dentist as soon as you can to make sure everything is ok.  I definitely know what you're going through. Hang in there and good luck with dinner ~HUG~

Blend it all up in the blender and drink it.

I got my first tooth pulled last Thursday. Everything I read said not to eat solid food for 3 days. It's been 5 days now and I'm still eating a diet of mashed potatoes, soup, and pudding because of the pain. I don't want to hurt Sir's feelings by refusing to celebrate Christmas with his family like we planned, but I don't feel like sitting there and watching everyone eat everything I can't have (basically anything that has to be chewed). Does anyone know of any way to speed  tooth healing so I'll be ok in a couple of days?

You have gone far too long to have pain with a normal extraction.   I would call my dentist for advice and maybe a follow-up visit.  It could be that you have an infection and might need antibiotics.  As ar as Christmas dinner...if the pain is still severe take a shot of scotch and cut the turkey into small pieces and mix them with the mashed potatoes...

Just indulge with smoothies while healing.  My left lower wisdom tooth socket had to be packed and though I was given pain killers, I did a shot of 151 rum when it did hurt.  I am 18 then.

I also had two more teeth removed due to breaking and I loved my Darvocets then.  I was 39...every body is different in healing and hurting, even in a 20-year span.

Which reminds me...how about baby food?  I noticed they make bigger jars now, the Gerber should still have brocholii, cheese and chicken.

I had four teeth pulled this year.  Two at a time.  Each doctor gave me a lot of antibiotics and gave me a prescription for eighteen vicodin.  Both told me to come back if I was experiencing pain after three or four days.  If you were their patient and following their direction you would have been back to see them a couple of days ago. I believe I was eating pretty much what I wanted after three days.  I was surprised.

tannin is the ingredient in tea that will help a dry socket heal faster.  (been there, done that)  after you've drunk your warm tea, take the used teabag and gently hold it on the extraction site.  hold it in place with your teeth (snuggly but not clenching your jaw) for about 20 minutes at a time.

it looks silly as all get-out, but it WILL help it heal a bit faster.  make sure you GENTLY rinse after eating anything, and dont use a straw for *ANYTHING*.  you want to avoid suction because it disrupts the healing tissues in the socket.

good luck!

Boy, I don't know. It sounds to me like your dentist is a great big dummy.

I had a badly infected molar pulled last year the day before Thanksgiving, and had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner the next day. No problem; never felt a thing. A few days after that, I started to have problems with a dry socket. The following Monday, I believe. Hurt like mad; felt like I was gargling with a glass of hornets. So I took an hour off from work, went back to the oral surgeon, and they repacked  the socket. By the time I got back to my office, it felt fine, and I never had another problem with it. Unless there's something really atypical about your situation (which doesn't seem to be the case, from what you're describing), I can't think of any reason you should have to be going through all this crap. I think a simple extraction, in the abscence of any complicating factors, should really be a lot easier than this for a competent dentist to manage.

Oh - and to answer your question - yeah, the socket heals fine when it's packed. It doesn't  close up; the open surfaces on the inside of the socket just heal up like new skin growing on a burn, and you still have an open socket for some weeks or months until it eventually does close up. Usually only takes a few days for the openm wound to  heal, because wounds inside the mouth typically heal very fast.

Like pixidustpet said, do not use a straw!!! At all!!!! And if you smoke, stop until it's healed. And no hard candies. And no blow jobs. Basically, don't suck anything. Go get some T3s and some baby food, and chill out until it's better. While yes, missing Christmas dinner will suck, trying to eat it will be much worse. Just stick to sides liked cooked vegetables and mashed potatoes. And like some people have suggested, the tannin in tea will help a bit, but red wine is also tannin heavy, and will give you the benefit of forgetting why you're not eating in the first place! And if anyone accuses you of drinking too much of it, say that it's to help the healing process and it is essential to your Christmas well being. Not that I've ever done that.
