defiantbadgirl -> Help!! How can I eat a holiday dinner? (12/23/2008 8:45:13 AM)

I got my first tooth pulled last Thursday. Everything I read said not to eat solid food for 3 days. It's been 5 days now and I'm still eating a diet of mashed potatoes, soup, and pudding because of the pain. I don't want to hurt Sir's feelings by refusing to celebrate Christmas with his family like we planned, but I don't feel like sitting there and watching everyone eat everything I can't have (basically anything that has to be chewed). Does anyone know of any way to speed  tooth healing so I'll be ok in a couple of days?

Drink plain Lipton (or any brand of regular tea...just not the herbal stuff). Drink it warm...not hot. There is a healing agent in the tea that should help.
But if it has gone on for this long perhaps you should call the dentist?

I went back to the dentist yesterday. He thinks I have a something called a dry socket because of my symptoms, but  I couldn't get my jaw open far enough for him to see for sure.

It hurts too much to chew. That's why I'm still eating stuff that doesn't require hardly any chewing. What I wish I could do is pack the socket with Neosporin, but unfortunately, it says for external use only.

If you have dry socket, chances are he will have to re-cut the area so it will heal properly

hi badgirl  :)

i pulled the following off the net.  it seems to me you need help from your dentist.  i'm surprised he didn't give you stuff to help.  if it was me i'd call him back, tell him i did some research and i need pain meds and whatever else he thought would help to help me enjoy Christmas:

Treatments and drugs
Treatment of dry socket is mainly geared toward reducing its symptoms, particularly pain. Dry socket treatment includes:
Medicated dressings. This is the main way to treat dry socket. Your dentist or oral surgeon generally packs the socket with medicated dressings. You may need to have the dressings changed several times in the days after treatment starts. The severity of your pain and other symptoms determines how often you need to return for dressing changes or other treatment.
Flushing out the socket. Your dentist or oral surgeon flushes the socket to remove any food particles or other debris that has collected in the socket and that contributes to pain or infection.
Pain medication. Talk to your doctor about which pain medications are best for your situation. If over-the-counter pain relievers aren't effective, you may need a stronger prescription pain medication.
Self-care. You may be instructed how to flush your socket at home to promote healing and eliminate debris. To do this, you'll be given a plastic syringe with a curved tip to squirt water, salt water, mouthwash or a prescription rinse into the socket. You may need to continue to do this daily for three or four weeks.

Once treatment is started, you may begin to feel some relief in just a few hours. Pain and other symptoms should continue to improve over the next few days. Complete healing typically goes smoothly and generally takes about 10 to 14 days.

good luck

So basically, it sounds like your screwed.

Get a to-go package, take it home and freeze it until you can enjoy it.

A blender will puree any food. We used them in the nursing home to feed the elderly with swallowing problems.

Ham, turkey, dressing, gravey, etc.... can all be blended where you won't have to chew a darn thing. After blended, you can scoop it out like potatoes and have a nice presentation on your plate.

Blend your favoriate pie with Ice Cream, Milk, Yogurt, or product of choice to enjoy desert.

Well, seems like you should be seeing a different dentist asap.

Yikes, I was going to suggest that you may have dry socket.  I've heard it's horrid pain.  I hope you are on the mend or will be soon.

Sir could demonstrate his care for you in your difficulty, all those things you can't chew, he could chew for you, break it down so you can swallow it.

I too am surprised your dentist just let you do home if he suspected a dry socket, the fastest cure for that is like mentioned above to recut it and pack it and give you pain meds. Sounds like you need a different Dr.

Also like fangs mentioned, the blender is your friend, while it might not be the consistency you can be creative with whats fixed , mashed potatoes, gravy, even the meat can be blended.

I have had a dry socket and it hurts like hell. Also my sister had very bad accident on Thanksgiving of one year and at Xmas her jaws were wired shut, she had no choice but to blend everything and suck through a straw.

Tho I would definitely not recommend using a straw at all since it causes suction which shouldn't be done until you know there is no longer a nerve exposed.

Back in '77 I got a dry socket off a wisdom tooth extraction, which I was silly enough to do just before going off to college.  It took well over a week to resolve.  Keep your head above your heart or you'll be hurting.

An infection can cause alot of pain too.  Are your gums swollen or you running a temp?  Recently happened to me.  Caused my jaw to lock and an ear infection.  Took heavy-duty antibiotics and slowly it got better.

moonvine -> RE: Help!! How can I eat a holiday dinner? (12/23/2008 2:57:28 PM)

If you're in this much pain you should be on pain meds.  If this dentist won't provide them get another dentist.   There's no reason to walk around with dental pain.

RCdc -> RE: Help!! How can I eat a holiday dinner? (12/23/2008 3:20:46 PM)

I am reading someof these posts in pretty much disbelief.  People have sympathy?  Has the majority read this post?
DBG - get a cluebyfour.  Get to a dentist and don't ask stupid questions and thinking and creating idiotic priority thoughts.

Every time I had to have a tooth removed and especially when I had my remaining teeth extracted, my dental specialist advised me to rinse after each meal and a few times between that with warm water and salt. I was to gently swish the water around before spitting it out. He said this is to flush out any particles of food stuck in the empty socket and to prevent getting a dry socket.
