I now pay all my bills online. I pay for groceries, gas and other stuff via Amex whenever possible. If they don't take amex, they almost always take Visa. I use maybe, one check a month.

So much more simple.

Lynxx..... you need to drop a dime to the FBI. The bank should have done that after the first 2 checks cleared and the problem was brought to their attention. Maybe they don't want the publicity < tough shit for them.

The FBI likely won't get involved if the amount in controversy is less than $250,000. Also they rarely get involved in cases on the side of a private individual, generally preferring to advocate for some corporate entity instead. Your tax dollars at work providing protection for corps instead of individual citizens.

Another thing people might find disturbing is there is a danger in real checks that has not been brought up. If you send me a real check, like printed by the bank or a company like Checks In The Mail, there is a routing number. With that routing number I can do a phone check and pay just about anything I want out of your account. I have to make up a check number, but as long as it is higher than last used it will be fine. Right on the phone, after the transaction goes through they will tell me to write void on the check and enter the debit in the ledger.

And don't pay a lawyer, doctor, hospital or government agency with a personal check. Go ahead and do it with a check drawn on a credit card, but not your main checking. A word to the wise. I can probably find a horror story or two if asked, but so can you.

After working at a bank for roughly 2 years, I realized how insanely easy it is to rip someone off with bogus checks. All someone needs is your bank acct number and routing number. It is LEGAL to print your own checks if you wish or order them from a third party company versus the bank. I have one account that I write checks from, then my main account that my direct deposit goes into. That way, if there are issues, they don't get access to the majority of my funds.

Any person or company I don't know or trust, gets a postal money order.

Once you rcvd the second bogus check, the account should have been frozen immediately!

My bank received no less than several HUNDRED fake checks daily! More than 99% where caught because of duplicate or out of order check numbers, suspicious signatures or checks look altered. That's just one company. Can you begin to fathom the number passed off every day at ALL the banks in the US.

Seriously, I doubt the FBI has the resources to handle it. It's left up to the banks.

While the FBI will likely not get involved, the Local Police will since there seems to be a targeted cluster in an area. that generally indicates that the perpetrator is local and those they can try to get off the street.
