janigrey -> politically incorrect question about a 'gay' thing about Christmas (12/14/2008 7:28:51 AM)

My brother in law and his husband  - both who I adore are the hardest people to shop for -
They are trendy Gay for lack of a better description.  They are middle age queens - embracing the fact they don't have to be over the top anymore!

I want to get them a really cool christmas present -

Is the broadway musical 'Legally Blonde' - gay cool?

Last year I bought them 'bathhouse Betty stuff and they L-O-V-E-D it.

I know I'm truly sticking my foot in mouth - but I'm doing it with the best intentions....

So - those of you who know 'the gay' better than I - either because you are - or have a deeper understanding.....

thanks for the christmas help!

If someone assumed I would like a specific gift because I am a lesbian, they would SOOOOOOOOOOOO miss the mark. To get me a cool gift, they would have to know ME, not my sexual orientation.

Ok I'll give the attractive slave girl to someone else then.[8|]

I didn't programme her for that, come to think of it.[8|]

well, hell.

Missing the mark - there is a 'stereotypical' - mass culture things that typical 'gays' like - lets think of those stereotypes and I'll even say the disclaimer - just cause you're gay doesn't mean you like/love
Liza,
Cher,
Bette
the Wizard of Oz,
Wicked the musical...

and yet - hey - a heavy number of straight people like them too - but I know a high % of gay people that consider Liza, Cher and Bette the holy trinity...

so I'm just asking to make a nice Christmas present not be schooled on the politically incorrectness of my statement... I'm quite aware that it is....

If they like musicals, then they would probibly like Legaly Blonde. It reallys doesn't have anything to do with being gay. Just get them something you think they are interested in and don't worry about the gay part.

Quite, what kind of music do they like? or film? or pictures? thats what you should base it on, not what you assume is typically gay because really there is no such thing

Madame4a -> RE: politically incorrect question about a 'gay' thing about Christmas (12/14/2008 7:51:51 AM)

approach them as people, not their orientation

janigrey -> RE: politically incorrect question about a 'gay' thing about Christmas (12/14/2008 7:52:40 AM)

Okay - I'm buying the musical tickets - they enjoy their broadway....

Lord - knows this thread is going to go on... and on ... and on...

While I hate to stereotype, because I have some really cool gay guy friends....every single one of them is really into home remodeling & decorating.  If yours are too, a Home Depot or Lowe's gift card would be a welcome gift.

What happened to Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion???  [:D]

BKSir -> RE: politically incorrect question about a 'gay' thing about Christmas (12/14/2008 2:55:32 PM)

LOL, I happen to dig Liza and Cher.  Don't really like Bette, and you forgot about Barbara Streisand, whom I detest with an unholy passion.  Haven't seen Wicked, though I want to, and the musical Rent, I think is one of the ten worst things to ever happen to entertainment.  It was a good idea, but it sucked!

And yeah, I'm one of those (nearing) middle aged gay men, as is my primary partner (he's just old though... ANCINET!) ...god I hope he doesn't read this... [;)]  It's a comfy time of life really.

Then again, I've always been into sports, played a good number of them, and cars, and all the 'manly' things.  Go figure...

As far as gifts go, you could always get them something as a gag gift, something so over the top 'gay' that there's no way in hell anyone could ever imagine it as a real present.  Depending on their senses of humour, that is.

Also, if they drink at all, there's nothing wrong with a nice selection of wines, two or three bottles maybe.  Doesn't even have to be expensive wine.

Or maybe a simple but elegant picnic set?  Who doesn't love those?

Hahahaha!  You know, I still want a formal apology from Canada for inflicting her on us.  I can accept that Kenny G was in direct retaliation for Wayne Newton, we deserved that... but Celine!?  WHY!? [;)]

I vote for a man that pops out of a huge cake!!!     To the OP,  the couple you describe is impossible to shop for. (my guess)

One year we got Mr R a bottle of Jack Daniel Wiskey.   The kicker was- that it was VERY wrapped.  A package inside a package inside a package.  It was fun.

You could maybe do a photo montage and frame it of them and family...

One year my brother got a beautician  maniquen head, instead of a record player.  It seems mom and a shopper collided, mixing up packages. He was so disappointed!!!

beargonewild -> RE: politically incorrect question about a 'gay' thing about Christmas (12/14/2008 3:10:02 PM)

ERM.....what's wrong with buying them something they both like? Tickets to a show they hadn't seen yet then they ranted about wanting to? Gift certificates to their fav clothing store, restaurant, etc. Best not to get focused on getting a present geared towards their orientation but according to what they like....as a person. Not all gay guys are into the stereotypical stuff!  I don't like musicals, don't wear the latest in DKNY or Dolce & Gabbani fashions.

- bear- the most unhip and untrendy gay guy here~

Well, that's not too bad.  I mean, who wouldn't like a little head for christmas?  [:D]
