If there was oil in Zimbabwe, the west would have been in there like a rat up a drain pipe, but as there is not, we all just look and wonder who will sort the mess out.

Well, once upon a time y'all DID have them sorted out, and they decided they didn't like that. According to their political leader, all the strife and hardship is the fault of the West. So, all in all I guess they're better off without oil and all those darn Westerners interfering.

BP -The Visigoths apparently ended up in Spain after their wanderings out of the north, sacking Rome on the way. We're Rome, a corrupt and decadent culture that once held supreme power but is now ripe for a very necessary destruction so we can rebuild. Or was there some aspect of the post you wanted explaining? (as a sadist I dont slap anyone that wants it!)

PA - elaborate? Sure, on which part?

Our use of cholera as a biological weapon to topple the Mugabe regime in Zimbabwe and recolonise the country in the name of Her Maj has been uncovered! Curses! Foiled again!

Heh.....I'd bet a few bucks that either India or Pakistan will become a full-fledged British butt boy--again--- before she can even think about corralling Zimbabwe. There's worse dudes already set up ready to take Mugabe's place should he fall off the face of the earth one day soon.

elaborate on possible solutions to tyranny.

It is easy to get carried away on the woe factor on how bad things are and might be.   Collectively or singularly, we all will have our own .... consequences.   In a way if the person hasnt had a well rounded background at this point, it isnt possible to catch up on all the years.

I guess my mind seeks solutions, even ideas that could lead to a solution, or even a lessening of the suffering.

I cant possibly comment PA - to speak of such things would undoubtedly result in me spending a vacation at Her Majesty's expense under the terrorist legislation in application here.

Well then I see your point.  What a good time to look thru my book collection.  You know- those old outdated things.

While your reply is in humor, the sad part is that there is some truth to it.      Hopefully we arent there quite yet.
Did you know that under the laws of physics, (barring the other laws) that if every person one earth jumped at the same time, that the gravitational pull would blow up the earth?

See. I do remember 1 thing from the class I flunked way back when.  :-)

So- Ill take your reply to mean, "I'm just like you..making it up as I go".

If I may point out, without the intent to offend any one nation or group, the ending of the the Imperial Colonial period of Most European countries contributed to the problems being experienced in the former colonies.

However, many of the former colonies would rather point a finger at who they kicked out or who left voluntarily than to assume any of the blame themselves.

With few exceptions, when Great Britain or any colonial power left a former colonial possession, it was in a "dont let the door hit you in the ass" situation.  The soon to be independent country wanted their former rulers out and as soon as possible.

Which of course led to more than a few problems.

For example while Great Britain was in charge of a colonial possession, at least the infrastructure was being maintained.  Once they left, that became the matter of the new government, which was unstable at best, non-existent at worst.

Colonial expansion only works when the colony actually becomes self supporting, otherwise the parent country and the colony suffer.  At the end of the Colonial era, which, for the most part, was shortly after WW2, Empires were shedding for three reasons, one they were on the losing side, or two, they were on the winning side and damn near broke, or three, they were recently liberated and in no condition economically to maintain colonial possessions.

Some countries tried, such as France, in South East Asia, but failed (can we say Dien Bien Phu?)

Now, some sixty years later, these former colonial possessions are still in the same basic condition they were in when the colonial powers left, primarily due to civil wars, and who are they going to blame?  Everyone else.

Now, here is the rub, with the interdependent world economy, in all honesty, there is not a country on the planet with the resources to save themselves let alone any one else.

So, I have the following suggestion.

We let the world economy tank, go through a couple of decades of depression, wars, plagues, pandemics, chaos, and senseless violence, and let the survivors figure out what to do at the end of that period.

Now granted a few billion people will end up dead, all the wonderful, shining cities will probably burn to the ground, a few thousand years of art, literature, and science will be lost, but.....

By the time it is all said and done, the planet ecology will have recovered, the air wont be polluted and best of all, no more reality television!!!!

61, I thought I was pessimistic.
lol

It is amazing tho, that most today have no idea about history.

Essentially we are, and we are being told of a massive train wreck.   Lets not forget the US is still under a state of emergency.  7 years of war.   Yet, the sun still comes up the next day.   Life is about to be measured in alot of different ways.

I heard some bomb was put near a bank somewhere west.   During katrina the grid refused to be wrong.   Refused to be flexable.  So here we are.

pahunkboy,

After going around this rock a few times, I have discovered a few major facts about the human race in general.

1) Whatever they can screw up, they will.
2) If it is in the least bit dangerous on a large scale, they will mess with it.
3) As soon as the excrement hits the rotating air circulation device, they will blame someone else.
4) the best way to solve arguments between nations is to see who has the biggest guns and the most cannon fodder.
5) Humanity, in general, has no concept of what humane treatment is.
6) Humanity in general, consists of a few billion individuals who let a few thousand tell them what to do, when to do it, who to do it with, why they should be afraid of it, and most of all, why it is wrong to think for themselves.
7) Humanity, in general, lost the concept of group survival as soon as the first cave man figured out that using a rock, he could kill another cave man.
8) Humanity, in general, is hell bent on destroying itself, the planet and any thing else it can drag down the toilet with it.
9) God, or whatever higher being you wish to believe in, has got to be on vacation, because if he was on the job, do you think there would not have been a Sodom and Gomorrah the sequel?
10) The very small percentage of people that actually have some redeeming qualities are so few and far between that they can never get enough of them together to make a difference, and the few small groups who do try end up in prison, executed, assassinated, slandered, discredited or flat ass ignored.

In short, the vast majority of humans are trying to wipe out the race and doing it with such zeal and enthusiasm that it would be comic if it were not so sad and discouraging.

"Picture if you will" please note the rod serling voice
"... a planet circling a 3rd rate star in the back water of the galaxy.  Lets call the planet 'Earth.'"
"Watch as a semi advanced race known as humanity speeds toward oblivion with such reckless abandon that it begs to question, is the race intelligent?"
"If the race survives the next hundred or so years, it may, god forbid, actually make it to traveling to the stars, where we, the intelligent creatures of the galaxy will either have to, if possible, teach them to be productive, responsible citizens of the universe, or, should that prove to be impossible, destroy it before it can spread its madness beyond its own solar system."
