MstrPBK -> Multipul terminology: What do we do ... (12/9/2008 10:38:13 PM)

Recently I noticed that the term "Edging" had three distinct meanings within the community. Being that I can be a stickler on language it bothers me a bit. What do others think?

1) Edging: another word for ejaculation control.
2) Edging: another word for snuff/death scenes; or even breath control.
3) Edging: another word for playing with blades and knifes.

All three definitions could fit. I have had play partners who thought that wax play was edging..so who knows? In the context of wiitwd, edging could mean anything. This may not be the answer you are looking for, but it is how I view the meaning.

I had previously thought it refered to knife play so I had been confused on several occations when it was used in other ways.  It does happen a lot in the community though that the same word is used in different ways.  Attempts have been made at glosseries but they always result in disputes of who's definition is 'correct'.

Before the advent of Grammar Nazies, Spelling Nazies and Terminology Nazies, and even after our American Brothers and Sisters decided to butcher the English Language and invent their own version (Bless there little red, white and blue socks (not sox) [;)] ) People actually enjoyed playing with and manipulationg English in the writing of enlightening doicuments where the thrust of a sentance or paragraph was clear even oif some strange terms were used. These days there are so many kill joys who have some bug or other firmly imbedded up their arse and insist that everything mist be politically correct, I can't help but wonder if this is the reason and not the advent of Television that people text messages or use emails rather than putting quill to parchment and actually writing to others..

Missokyst -> RE: Multipul terminology: What do we do ... (12/10/2008 6:01:17 AM)

Edgy is something that another person finds dangerous or has not done.  For some wax play is edgy, for others using a belt instead of a hand.  I don't know what I find edgy anymore.

I don't use or know the term for myself but looking "edging" up I find "edge play" more so than "edging" (which could be construed as the verb for the noun).

Here are opinions on Edge play from a variety of D/s "experts"

Definition of Edge Play http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edgeplay

Dunno if this helps ...

I know several women with multiple personality disorder, now known as DID.  When they change from one personality to another, it's known as switching.  Of course in the BDSM sense, that word refers to Tops and Bottoms changing positions, or whipping with a switch. So "switching" is my confusing word.

If you don't like words to evolve, try Latin, its a dead language.

In regards to your question in the subject line of "what do we do", when someone says they like edge play, ask them "what do you mean by that?"

So is Ancient Greek, Ancient Hebrew and Sumarian to name but a few with the two latter ones listed being two which I use regularly in my studies and transcriptions and within ritual.

*g*  While I totally appreciate the vote and he is now worried that I will have an over-inflated ego, I do have to say that I first heard John Warren use that question and I think it is a great way to understand how other people are using terms.

But that's the thing... its just so sensible and practical.  Instead of more labels, acronyms, etc... people need to learn to listen to each other, learn to hear what the other person is trying to say... even if they aren't saying it very well.  Would help avoid a lot of misunderstandings.

I agree with Padriag.  ~teasing smile~  hopefully, Knight will not have to be worried.

It does make perfect sense...people actually have to communicate.
A question is asked, it has to be answered and then there is give-and-take.  Something that is supposed to be one of the essences of not only wiitwd but also of interaction between any two humans.

elegantalexis -> RE: Multipul terminology: What do we do ... (12/10/2008 1:19:02 PM)

I have 2 definitions for edgeplay. The first one is knifeplay, which I am interested in and the general term edgeplay in reference to BDSM due to most physicartic(?) doctors calling it that as opposed to vanilla lifestyle.

Please forgive my misspelling.  I don't have a dictionary at this household and tis enough to drive me nuts.

As with all words, always, it is the context with which they are used.
