Clarification: - Pillory—device, traditionally wood, at which the victim must stand while her/his head and hands are restrained through fitted holes in the pillory. Adjustable height is indicated unless you intend to apply the Procrustean solution to the matter of height. (That's a joke, folks.)
- Stocks—device, traditionally wood, that restrains the victim's ankles (and sometimes wrists), while they sit exposed to public ridicule.
Both are historic means of public punishment. The device in which Heath Ledger was "publicly pilloried" in The Knight's Tale was a pillory. Although I can't find an image reference quickly, my recollection of a woodcut depicting stocks used in Puritan New England were wrist-and-ankle stocks. Old Torture Devices Lady Delilah Deb
