on another place i read posts, i read and viewed photos of a friend's tree. holiday tree. they're non-specific paganish, so its her "christokwanzhanuyule" tree. um.

why do we have to be so bloody inclusive? why cant i just have a holiday tree? "dont do any specific religion, get a blast outta decorating, so i do it to the nines!" "i grew up putting up a tree and i like it." "its SPARKLY!!" (ok, so the last one is *definitely* something i would say.

)

i dont do a religious thing at the moment. if i did, it would be yule, although the present orgy day is still on the 25th. actually its going to be later this year, because of visitation from another state. (no issues, its just the way it is.) but...if i dont do a certain holiday, why feel obligated to toss in all of them?

you're a christian? merry christmas! a pagan who does nordic tradition? blessed yule! jewish? happy hannukka! (i admit bothching the spelling of that one all to hell. i'm sorry.) african american and reclaiming traditions? joyous kwanza! (probably misspelled that one too.) glorious winter holiday to everyone! but...please dont make me feel bad if i missed one. you do your winter holiday, i'll do mine, we'll all celebrate a new year (unless you celebrated the turn of the year at samhain) and wish each other peace and happiness....

wait, wasnt that what the winter holidays were about to begin with?

You can have any kind of tree you want to, is someone trying to stop you from having a holiday tree?

My parents have a Christmas tree tho they aren't Christians. I'm decorating a really large branch and I'm not a Christian, so far no one has tried to stop any of us.

You can have a Christmas camel if you want one. There certainly weren't any spare trees in Bethlehem on the night concerned. You can have anything you want.
I once had reason to visit a new fetish friend at home to find that this nutcase had decorated his Christmas tree with various pairs of his wife's knickers.
Each to his own, but I would rather he had used clean ones.

That's how i address people this time of year...i seem not to miss anyone.
Actually, i've a friend up north who's a Buddhist...he puts up a tree, and decorates and plays carols, and still holds local buddhist meetings in his house. A few well-intentioned folks decided to pull him aside...apparently it's all good.

I have a Christmas cactus I adopted. I even bought the little miniature ornament balls to put on it. and I agree, we should just be nice and respect each others traditions.

My dad (Who really isn't the best christian, and I don't think he even considers himself one) gets pissed off becuase of how politically corect people try to be this time of the year. He told me recently that If He were to go to a fast food place, it would be Wendy's. Just because they always put a sign in their window that says "HAPPY BIRTHDAY JESUS CHRIST!!" And he does make it a point to tell everyone "MERRY CHRISTMAS!" that he sees.

He says "I wouldn't get pissed if someone wished me a happy Kwanza or Hannukka (I can't spell either, so I used your spellings! lol), so people shouldn't get pissed if I wish them a Merry Christmas." I love him.

In The Netherlands we celebrate the death and rebirth of the Creator at least three times. First on 5 December the birthday of Sinterklaas, next the birthday of Jesus, and last on 31 December the end of the old year and the start of the new year. All of which are on the wrong date, as it should be on the day of the winter solstice.

A bit about ye ole Roman hollyday the Saturnalia, that precedes Christmas -

"The Saturnalia was a large and important public festival in Rome. The Saturnalia was originally celebrated in Ancient Rome for only a day,on dec. 17th but it was so popular that soon it lasted a week , ending on Dec. 23rd. despite Augustus' efforts to reduce it to three days, and Caligula's, to five. It involved the conventional sacrifices, a couch (lectisternium) set out in front of the temple of Saturn and the untying of the ropes that bound the statue of Saturn during the rest of the year. A Saturnalicius princeps was elected master of ceremonies for the proceedings. Besides the public rites there were a series of holidays and customs celebrated privately. The celebrations included a school holiday, the making and giving of small presents (saturnalia et sigillaricia) and a special market (sigillaria). Gambling was allowed for all, even slaves; however, although it was officially condoned only during this period, one should not assume that it was rare or much remarked upon during the rest of the year. It was a time to eat, drink, and be merry. The toga was not worn, but rather the synthesis, i.e. colorful, informal "dinner clothes"; and the pileus (freedman's hat) was worn by everyone. Slaves were exempt from punishment, and treated their masters with (a pretense of) disrespect. The slaves celebrated a banquet: before, with, or served by the masters. Yet the reversal of the social order was mostly superficial; the banquet, for example, would often be prepared by the slaves, and they would prepare their masters' dinner as well. It was license within careful boundaries; it reversed the social order without subverting it.[1]

The customary greeting for the occasion is a "io, Saturnalia!" — io (pronounced "yo") being a Latin interjection related to "ho" (as in "Ho, praise to Saturn")."

It's all good. We've got... oh... about 50 million different ways that we spell it.

I'm a big fan of Winter-Een-Mas mysef (http://www.wintereenmas.com/) but other than I just say "Happy Holidays". It's easy and avoids a couple of personal issues I have at this time of year.

I agree with the title, it's a tree. Generally we keep them outside around here, but y'all do what you want.

There is no such a thing as a Christmas tree, that was some sort of Nordic rite brought in as a compromise to bring the "heathens" into the flock, as was the changing of the appointed sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday. Even Christmas day was selected to appease, rather than for any historical significance.

When I was young it meant something. Of course we liked getting the gifts, but it was more than that. When the Granparents were still alive, whichever Uncle had the biggest house hosted it. We got to see all the Aunts and Uncles and it probably was a decent get together for them as well being siblings and all. This was Christmans Eve and for the most part inlaws did not usually come. That was for Christmas Day. The host was usually my Uncle Tom, he had a huge rec room in the basement and it was very close for his Parents to get there. They also had an organ and a son who knew how to play it.

When the Grandparents died off the family sort of fell apart. All civil with each other but don't do anything like this anymore, moved away etc. I think, I mean I REALLY think that they did it for the Grandparents, gather up all the grandchildren and get them in one room for this. Though it cost everybody buying gifts, the focus was on getting the family together on one special day.

My Parents are the only divorced Parents ever since this family got to Ellis Island. The olman showed up, with gifts and money for the olady, read catching up on child support. However on gifts for the kids they imposed limits on how much one could spend.

The experience was priceless. To this day the olman still has this Ronco cigarette dispenser I got him perhaps 35 years ago.

I can't compete with that experience. None of us even pretended to be religious at all, this was all about family. Once that fell apart those days were over.

So if you can, enjoy your ChrisHanuKwanzmas or whatever you would like to call it. If you are the type to drag a tree into the house with all the bugs and whatever on it and risk burning your house down, by all means. Just don't lose sight that all of this is about family, whether by blood or choice. And that can be twenty people or just two.

For some it is only one :-(, in that case you go out on the town, please try not to get a DUI, nothing wrecks your day worse. Believe me I know.

Merry Christmas to all....It IS Christmas time and we celebrate the birth with the traditional tree, gifts and, of course, a huge meal on the Eve and Christmas Day. It IS my tradition..."Happy Holiday" does not work for me..."HappyChrisKwanka" or whatever, does not work for me either...that's not my holiday. If you believe in the old testiment, the Koran, Saturnia, festivis, Budha..or whatever, enjoy your holiday or whatever it is you celebrate.

Every year assholes make fun of Christians, their traditions, and their celebrations. I'm a terrible Christian but the holidays we celebrate bring back lovely memories of past days and a childhood that will never be seen again. It's a time for families to gather
and, even if for a day, get along and share the love.

To the "politically correct" folk who are trying to find a reason for life...I wish you well but you are totally irrelevant.

Who really cares what people do towards the end of December, who or what they celebrate, as long as they have fun and enjoy themselves, what does it matter.

As it is given the lives most of us have to lead, we spend precious little time on celebration as it is, why do people seek to correct others in what they do, if they are happy and they are harming none, leave them alone.
