Is that your tree An ? Quite interesting. You don't mind I hope, that I will be mentally picking apart the symbolism for the next week or so.

One of the coolest traditions I have participated in was one set up by a family in the neighborhood.  They have a large pine tree in their front yard near the side walk.  They hang little cards on it and small pencils for friends and neighbors to write their wishes for the coming year.

Merry Christmas to all....It IS Christmas time and we celebrate the birth with the traditional tree, gifts and, of course, a huge meal on the Eve and Christmas Day.  It IS my tradition..."Happy Holiday" does not work for me..."HappyChrisKwanka" or whatever, does not work for me either...that's not my holiday.  If you believe in the old testiment, the Koran, Saturnia, festivis, Budha..or whatever, enjoy your holiday or whatever it is you celebrate.

Every year assholes make fun of Christians, their traditions, and their celebrations. I'm a terrible Christian but the holidays we celebrate bring back lovely memories of past days and a childhood that will never be seen again.  It's a time for families to gather
and, even if for a day, get along and share the love.

To the "politically correct" folk who are trying to find a reason for life...I wish you well but you are totally irrelevant.

Who was making fun of Christmas?

Yes, Christmas is the holiday you celebrate, and that's totally fine. However, it's not everyone's holiday, so I don't see why anyone would have issues with saying happy holidays. I'm not saying I have problem when people say merry christmas to me, or happy hannukah, or whatever else they choose to say, but I don't understand why Christians get all bent out of shape over people saying happy holidays. It's not the only holiday in december. There is no war on Christmas.

i'm sorry if that's how you took my rant.  i'm not making fun of christians, i'm grumbling about those people who want to include every winter holiday into one.  its just silly.

i refer to the mass unwrapping of gifts in *our* house as the present orgy.  why?  because we dont do christian traditions, and that's what it is.  we unwrap the gifts we got for one another.  another tradition we have is that the stocking presents are from santa and the presents under the tree are from family and friends.

what i was trying to say (quite possibly badly) is that everyone should celebrate their own religious (or not) traditions, cherish their friends and family, and be at peace with themselves instead of being all PC about the whole thing.

christmas day?  i'll probably be up around 2 am crying.  why?  cause for me its just the second anniversary of fallcon dying.  we'll have the family dinner with the imp on the 28th when he's here.

Not a problem... I probably over-reacted.  It's just that I'm so damn tired of people picking on christians, making fun of them and some of the rituals that christians do, particularly those that are born again.  At this time of year there are always stories about some individual or small group that is suing the community because a creche that has been on exhibit for generations somehow threatens their rights.  America was founded by christians who have been the most tolerant of other peoples religions and welcomed everyone with an opportunity to create a better life, and I am probably too sensitive to the ridicule of my religious beliefs.  Again, was my incorrect  interpretation of the thread....sorry for my post.    cory

Why is Christmas celebrated in late December?Jesus' birthday appeared on Roman calendars after the Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity. But despite Constantine's conversion to Christianity the church was still embattled: There were plenty of pagans around. The December date wasn't the result of careful historical research; it was chosen because there was a pagan tradition of feasting and celebration around this time. The church fathers wanted to offer an alternative to it. (Not everyone agreed to celebrate the birthday. Many members of the Eastern Orthodox Church delay celebrations until Epiphany, their commemoration of Jesus' baptism.)
The pagan celebration in question was Saturnalia, an ancient Roman holiday honoring Saturn, god of agriculture. You might wonder who would celebrate agriculture in the dead of winter when nothing is growing. The answer is--lots of people. Late December is the winter solstice, the time of year in the Northern Hemisphere when the night is longest and the day is shortest. It is therefore one of the year's pivotal points. From this moment, darkness and death begin to ebb; light and life begin to rise. No wonder most cultures celebrate the solstice in some way. To paraphrase Bette Midler, they are celebrating the seed that in the spring becomes the rose.
quote pulled from Encarta. Most Christians i know are aware of this fact.  So there's no need to apologize kitten.  Most biblical scholars place Jesus' actual birth sometime in the fall....due to the fact that a census is mentioned, and no such thing would have happened during the pagan high holy days.  i'm a Christian, but i like some of the pagan traditions that make Christmas special. So unless we're ready to get rid of the trees and wreaths(both pagan symbols later adopted by Christians)...some of my fellpw Christians may want to acknowledge that sometimes mixing cultures and beliefs make for some lovely traditions. Happy Holidays!

no reason to apologise!  see, this is what i mean about the *true* meaning of the season.  you and i misunderstood one another, explained, and its all good.

i have no issue with creche scenes, except when they're so incredibly tacky you wonder what the heck the person was thinking when they designed it.  the same thing with the house that's so overdecorated that your first impression is "OMG! santa threw up all over that house!"

and while the US may have been built on the idea of religious tolerance, we also have a history of intolerance for anyone that isnt exactly fitting the mold of what "us" is.  i try to be tolerant of others, but....great googly moogly, there are times i want to say "pull your head outta there before you break your neck when you sit down too fast!"  maybe lennon had it right when he said "give peace a chance".

holiday blessings,
kitten

heh...when discussing tacky Christmas decorations a local landmark deserves a special mention here .  The whole place is pink and white and big stones for the architecture to begin with and during the winter hollydays it literally explodes with giant elves and gift boxes and lights and trees and bows and....

That place reminds me of one of my 8 year old's crayola inspired creations...and then somebody throws up on it.

Yeah, I went there to watch a theatrical performance and may sure not to have any wine that night.  The tacky, garish, kitschy decorations gave me nightmares.
