opposingtwilight -> flippen back spasms!! (12/4/2008 5:26:57 PM)

I have shortened hamstrings from wearing high heels too often. Combine that with fibromyalgia and what do you get? Back spasms! YAY ME!

Actually, no. Not so much. They suck.

I bent over to pick up a pair of panties last Wednesday and threw my back out. Ended up face first in a chair until I could slither down to the floor and whimper. LOL On Thanksgiving, while everyone else was munching on turkey and dressing, I was having another spasm every 20-30 minutes. I wanted to die.

Its gradually been improving, thank God, but I still can't walk very far without risking another (tiny little tweakish) spasm. And its bumming me out. I love to move. I love to dance. I love to be active. And right now I can't do noffin. It sucks.

So, cheer me up, k? Or give me some helpful advice for lengthening my hamstrings so this doesn't happen again. But also, cheer me up.

Do you mean achille's tendons (the ones that go from the knees to your heels)?

If so.....

Stand on a stair, or say a stack of phone books.  Stand so the ball of your foot's close to the edge of the stair.  Lift yourself on your toes, then gradually lower yourself until the heels are below the step.  Repeat 10-12 times.  As your tendons loosen up, you'll be able to do sets of these.

One of the best things you can do for your back right now is to be as active as you can (it'll hurt, yes, but it will help.)

No, I mean the muscles along the backs of my thighs.

I am trying to be active. :(

I feel like I am walking funny. When I try to walk normally it causes spasms and I fall down. Major lame.

thornhappy -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/4/2008 5:54:37 PM)

Ah, these call for leashes...or long towels...or any other thing that works for the following:

Lie on your back on the floor, stick the loop of the leash around your foot, and start pulling your leg towards the ceiling.  Pull to a good stretch and hold for a minute.  Lower and rest 5-10 secs, then repeat.  Do 3 times, then switch legs.  You can leave the other leg flat on the floor, or bend the knee, especially if you are having lower back problems.

Hi ot,

A prostitute was doing her taxes with a new tax preparer. He asked what she wanted as her profession and when she replied "working girl" he explained that working girl wasn't a category. She went home but came back later that afternoon.
She said he should put her profession as chicken rancher.
He replied "what"! "Why a chicken rancher?"
And she replied " well I raised over a 1000 cocks this year!"

Happy holidays,
T

Have you been to see an orthopedist?

When I got hit by a car in the fall of 2006, I first had to wear a material stretchy back brace, then I got fitted for a custom back brace. (thank goodness for health insurance) I still use the lumbar pillow I got from the doctor to this day..

I was given muscle relaxers which really help with back spasms..

As long as the muscles are not relaxed, they are not going to be able to heal properly. I truly hope you seek medical attention at your earliest possible opportunity.

Take care,
MD

opposingtwilight -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/4/2008 6:39:06 PM)

This happens regularly, MD. I have muscle relaxers and they helped during the worst of it when the muscle would just keep spasming over and over again. At this point it only spasms if I move the wrong way or if I'm up and about for too long at a time.

Fibromylagia isn't quite the same as being hit by a car. If I can lengthen my hamstrings it will help considerably.

TYM, that nearly made me burst out laughing in the middle of an important conversation! lol As it was, I snorted ... So unladylike. [8|]

DesFIP -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/4/2008 6:44:57 PM)

Go see the chiropractor for the back spasms. He may also sell a yoga band, one brand name is Theraband. It's a length of stretchy material. Easier to work with than a towel. In the meantime try pantyhose for the exercises. Keep the stretchy thing next to the bed. Do at bedtime and before getting up in the morning and during the night if you wake up feeling bad. Along with lifting the foot, alternating pointing the toes toward you and then back again, also pull the leg side to side. Go as far as you can without it being painful. Keep doing it.

And once the spasms stop you still want to do this to keep the hamstrings stretched. You also want to stand on a step and drop your heels down. Five minutes twice a day while lying in bed is more than enough to prevent a recurrence.

I recommend a chiropractor a massage therapist and a physical therapist.  Got insurance or cash or credit?

pahunkboy -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 5:25:44 AM)

hello, I dont have fiber myalga, but I do have injuries.

I can tell you that I cut out the muscle relaxers. I am on a mission to reduce the pills I take, as I suspect the benefit is small.
So now when I DO take a muscle relaxer, it works.

Stretch.   google yoga.  I used to do this yoga that you reach up to the sky then down to the floor.

Watch extreme temps, cold.

Also grab a cheap rube of ben gay.  the generic is fine.    rub it on, but pls know that it stings if you just came out of the shower.

also try rubbing your feet down with olive oil.

windchymes -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 5:45:49 AM)

Your doctor, the one you see for the fibromyalgia, can refer you for physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the hamstrings.  It's actually a very common problem and one that's easily fixable IF YOU DO THE EXERCISES regularly as prescribed.  Actually, the "exercises" are really more stretching than anything else, not difficult at all.  Should take about 5 or 10 minutes a day.  You should only need a few visits to the PT, and he/she can provide you with some relief and will give you the home exercise program the first visit.

If you don't have insurance or if money is tight (and who's isn't? lol) maybe someone like an athletic trainer or coach or even an avid runner can show you leg muscle stretches.

Just to make sure, though, because I really don't like giving medical advice online....is the "wearing high heels combined with fibromyalgia causing back spasms" your own diagnosis, or have you actually seen a doctor recently who told you that?   As always, before starting any exercise program, you should check with your doctor first.

cjan -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 6:18:30 AM)

1) Comprehensive , daily stretching. Comprehensive means the whole body, not just the hamstrings. I recommend yoga.

2) Massage therapy will not only help with your spasms but also fibromyalgia. Make sure you find an experienced, good massage therapist

I've been told by the doctor before to lay off on the high heels because it increases my risk of back spasms. (I'm stubborn and don't listen well.) I was recently diagnosed with FMS which also increases the risk.

I appreciate all the advice. Thank you guys!

It sounded like you probably had (after I reread the thread).  I just like to put a little disclaimer [;)]

OrionTheWolf -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 7:33:04 AM)

Hey girl, glad to see you posting still.

I had a severe back injury almost a decade ago, and most of the doctors just wanted to operate. I spent almost a year and a half inactive, not bending much and such. Finally found a good doc that took a different approach, and during physical therapy the therapist recommended I try Tai Chi and yoga. It has helped extremely, so much that I can even do back bends, bend at the waist and place my forehead on my knees, etc. Once you become somewhat knowledgable in both, you can isolate the movements that help you the best. If you go for a Tai Chi instructor, look for one that is an older asian one, or that was taught by an older asian.

I still on rare occasions may get spasms if I do a particular movement and have not stretched out for the day.

Ask for a referral to physical therapy...and while you are there have them coach you in body mechanics... you already know this but bending over to pick things up is BAD.

I find valerian to be somewhat helpful with back spasms.

opposingtwilight -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 7:41:45 AM)

Surgery just makes me squickish.

I am def. going to start doing more stretches and stuff. You would think that since I love to dance I would be doing this sort of thing already ... [8|]

SavageFaerie -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 9:12:22 AM)

I kinda have the opposite problem.

I have spent the last 8 years battling agoraphobia. 99% of the time I am either barefoot and wearing flat shoes.

Since moving to NYC which is a walking city, it kills my calves when I walk more than a few blocks sometimes even less. Stairs just about do me in. When I was visiting my friend in NJ, she was massaging my calves and found when I stretch my feet the pain intensifies. She tought maybe the problem was because I have not walked all that much over the years and that my calf muscles might have shrunk. I talked to my dr about it who is a rhematoligist (sp) but he didnt really comment on it.

Now I have chronic muscle lock down in my shoulders and neck due to an auto accident back in 96 or so, we are talking my muscles especially in my neck are brick like, alot of times the muscles will wrap around my neck and practically effect my breathing..

I am doing much better about getting out and running errands when I can make myself do it. But its a no win situation agoraphobia or intense pain in my legs when I get back to the apt. I have thought about getting shoes or boots that have a bit of a heel so the calf doesnt have to work so hard.

When I remember I do try and stretch them, but I have CRS and can never remember.

elegantalexis -> RE: flippen back spasms!! (12/5/2008 10:41:52 AM)

I have fibro as well and last night, I had back spasms from sitting improperly at this computer.  I took a Soma and almost fell asleep while IMing Sir (I will be teased later, I know....lol).

I also have heel spurs and having the balls of my feet on a stair and stretching up and down that way helps out with my calfs and back as well.

One more exercise for the back...lay flat on your back and curl up in a fetal position gently .  That stretches the back muscles even more.
