I have no idea what to do with my floors....carpet did not do it so I had to take the carpet up and now I'm living on the concrete slab.  I understand sealed concrete is "in" right now, does anyone know how to do it?  What is required, the costs?  How to keep the cats off it until it dries?  Can a completely inept creative person do it?

I just googled it.  Try www.concretenetwork.com.  Also, I used DIY and HG TV a lot for projects.  Both of those sites are pretty good.

While sealed concrete is beautiful. Hard floors like that are really hard on the back. Nothing there to cushion the impact.

I need something that can withstand cat urine.  The only other thing I can think of is linoleum, but I'd think concrete would be easier to scrub.

nothing can withstand cat urine but the right products to clean it up. I wouldnt recommend carpet. Other than that you can get ceramic tile or woodfloors. Why is the cat not peeing in the litterbox?

Concrete is easier to scrub but if you have back problems its going to be way worse. Even Ceramic floors are harderon the body than carpet or wood.

You said you run a cat rescue.  Are the cats sick?  I mean, why aren't they using the litterbox(es)?  I guess if cat urine is a problem, you prolly should stick with sealed concrete...almost anything else is going to be ruined by the cat urine.  I think even ceramic tile (if not installed properly).  It sounds like this is a project you are going to do yourself.  It may be worth it to go to the hardware store and ask an expert (if you can find one).  Tell him/her your problem and see if they can come up with something.

hahaha isn't that the truth. We've been living on a pure concrete floor for four or 5 months now and it's a bitch on the feet. Not only is it always icy cold it's always ROCK HARD. In the huge garage in the back if you don't have shoes on to be out there, your feet hurt in 10 minutes of standing on it, and even with shoes your feet hurt with in 20 minutes.

For the most part they use the litterboxes.  Sometimes they miss, I have one with a tendency to have crystals in her urine and she lets me know when there's a problem by not using the litterbox.  Sometimes when they are kittens or elderly they do not have good bladder control, etc.

Toodles does not use the litterbox when she has a urinary tract infection because she is alerting me to the fact there is an issue.  Other cats do not use it sometimes for other reasons.

I thought about wood, I would love wood floors from Ikea, but I think claws would mess that up.

I've been living on mine for a year.  Upstairs I am in the process (when I am not on collarme) of taking up the carpet - unfortunately what I have upstairs is untreated wood, ugh.

There is a rubbery soft cushy thick black puzzle piece looking  play ground type covering, I am considering it for my concrete floors, check into that.

I assume it'd wash rigfht off, cause member it goes on children's play grounds so it's gotta be cleanable some how, what with all the fluids that might get on it, like blood and spit and piss and well you know.

Wood is lovely, true, but it stains like crazy...yes, even sealed wood, unless you take really, really good care of it.

Did you know you can get wearable pet diapers?

I don't think any of my cats would wear a diaper for more than .5 seconds.

OP, I'd go get some sealant that's meant for underwater exposure like swimming pools. You might want to go with a higher end epoxy, or poly. Sink a drain in the middle, if the cats are exposed to a specific area, that'd probably make it a lot easier on you. If you got the nice stuff, you could probably just end up hosing off the mess, without risking damage to the floor, and the pee would be less likely to stain.

Having had some accidental experience with this problem, I can tell you that the cost of sealing a concrete floor is extremely low.
(under $100.00 generally)
A good brand is Kilz.

As for the cats.... 3 choices *1* Board em at a kennel or with friends for a couple days. *2* Lock 'em outside with food and water by the door. or *3* Lock them out of that part of the house (in a spare bedroom?)

Needed Items : Drop Cloths to cover furniture. Painters tape (Paper / Masking Tape *DO NOT USE GREY OR DUCT TAPE!!*)
LARGE rollerbrushes and a couple refills for them. Extentions for the rollerbrushes. Paint trays. Paint stiring paddles (1)  (can also be an old wooden ruler.) Some friends and snacks/drinks. OPTIONAL:  cheap pack of FOAM brushes

Ok some tips to help.....

You can usually find painting kits which will have a tray, small roller, 1 or 2 small refills for the brush. *Occasionally they even give you the extender*  the little rollers in the pack are useless unless you want to punish/torture your submissive by making them use it.
ALWAYS have help moving heavy furniture. (now that you will have a smooth surface for them to glide on maybe spring for those little hover disk things that go under the legs) - This would be a great job for a couple of hulky slaves wouldn't it ladies? -
ALWAYS have MASS VENTILATION!! If you start feeling dizzy or light - headed get out of there for a few. (snacks on the back porch??)

directions if needed...
Remove furniture (best & quickest) or move to 1 end and cover with plastic dropcloths(ok & slowest) (might want to bunch the edges around the bottoms of any furinture legs and wrap some tape around as an added precaution. * I hate paint on my cherry chair legs*)
scrape up old glue from carpet.
pry up the anchor strips. (no matter how careful you are, some concrete is gonna come up with them) (small pail of plaster patch is about $1-2 or the toothpaste trick - it is doubtful anyone is gonna be walking the very edge of the wall anyway)

# We put in a wood floor so 1/2" gap between the floor and the baseboard didn't effect anything physically or visually#

Run the tape along the bottom of the baseboard with the edge as close to the wall as possible and then fold up along the edge to protect it from any splatter because you will want to get ALL the way under there with paint. (The FOAM brushes are really good for this)

Stir the Sealer - Fill the Trays - Dip your Brushes and Have fun!!!!

OH! ONE LAST THOUGHT.....
Be AWARE of your surroundings... Do the edges first. Then pick a corner DIAGONALLY or ACROSS from the door.
Funny as it may seem at the time, Once it sets in that you are gonna have to use more paint and maybe spend more $$, You are gonna be PISSED when you paint yourself in a corner LITERALLY.

ALL this is subject to what your final plans are for the room but it is a basic rundown. I hope I helped you a little.

Brought a house once. Woman had a doberman who had pups in a room off the basement. Her and her kids were to damm lazy to clean the concrete floor in it and just kept on putting paper over paper. I had to use a whole case of Pine Sol and scrub brushes to get it cleaned.
