I have seen people do some amazingly cruel things, though I can understand not swerving to miss an animal on a busy highway..the accident and danger to human life is too great..but not stopping is another thing. Living in Florida, road kill is a daily sight on the roads, mostly opossums, raccoons, birds, cats, dogs, deer and armadillos, rarely gators. Gators they tend to stop for as it seems only the BIG boys want to cross the road looking for girlfriends. Watched a bull gator take the tire and bumper off a police car once after the officer annoyed him by trying to get him to move and stop blocking traffic. Officer stopped traffic and let the gator decide to move on his own after that. The ones that get me the most are the drivers who deliberately aim for gopher tortoise (s) and run over them. This cracks the shell and without care they will die, many times even with care they will die, and they are a protected species. You can usually tell who has done it as if it is a sedan or smaller it will be sitting on the side of the road with a blown tire from the larger boys. There is no reason to do this as they are easily avoided, not like they run. Too many people who don't own dogs and cats consider them dumb animals incapable of thought. Those of us who live with them know that not only are the scientist wrong when they say they don't understand human speech, but that they think, reason things out, can use tools (I have watched them open doors to go out (can't get them to close them for some reason), puzzle out a problem and solve it to get something they want and mourn the loss of a companion or person. They are raised with our care and while they can't speak our language (most some can a word or two (Komodo can say Out), do understand far more than sit, stay, heel. Guide Dogs and Service dogs are remarkable in what they can learn to do and papers and TV broadcasts report constantly on dogs and cats who have called 911, awakened people and figured out how to rescue people in dangerous situations that baffle humans. It is not all instinct. I am not surprised to see this dog do his best to save his companion and reason out what needed to be done. I am just sorry that it was most likely in vain, and the result of someone DUMPING their dogs on the side of the highway figuring someone would rescue them and take them home. Thousands of animals are abandoned this way each year. poenkitten
