Heroic dog in a remarkable, amazing video.

soul2share -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 6:30:07 AM)

I hope whoever is responsible for those two dogs ending up out there rots in hell........I don't speak the language of the announcer, but the video just ripped my heart apart.

sirsholly -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 6:31:14 AM)

how very sad.

bluepanda -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 7:16:51 AM)

My god. That's amazing. Of course it's terribly sad, but at the same time, I'm flabbergasted at the dog who figured out in that moment of stress that dragging the other dog to the side of the road was the best way to keep him safe. When you think about it, that really takes a level of analytical thought that you don't typically associate with dogs. It's really quite remarkable.

Of course there is a possibility that it did not want to save the other dog, but to have it for lunch?

Always looking for the bright side, aren't you?  lol

Amazing video.  It makes you question what you think you know about dogs and their level of thought.

But did the dog live?

kittinSol -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:01:17 AM)

I wish I hadn't seen that video.

It sure didn't appear so, but I could be wrong. I think he was a goner.

Aynne88 -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:08:25 AM)

I had two labs, siblings, for fourteen years, and I have seen them nurse each other through injuries and illlnesses just like humans. I won't go on because I am at the office and I will cry, but suffice to say the bond between two dogs can be amazing.  Thanks for posting that even though it was hard to see.

ElectraGlide -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:09:08 AM)

I hope the dog lived. I do not have the stomach to watch the video.

PhoenixOfSnow -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:13:59 AM)

I can't watch the video. Puppies in pain or dying... I already saw one dog die in front of my eyes. Once is more than enough for me. *tries not to cry*

The video sounds interesting though...

bluepanda -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:18:25 AM)

I know this probably sounds cold, but if the dog didn't live, at least it appeared to be a quick death. If that's the case, then thank god for that, because growing up in a rural area I've seen many, many dogs hit by cars who suffered tremendously. I had one dog whose entire left side was ripped right off her body by the rear bumper of the car that sideswiped her, and I've never seen an animal in so much pain. A year later, when our beagle was killed instantly by a hot-rodding teenager, I understood even in my grief how fortunate the poor little bastard was to have died so quickly. Still a sad thing, but there's sad and then there's horrific. Horrific is much worse.

Icarys -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:22:23 AM)

There's a very sad part to this but surely I'm not the only one who saw something remarkable as well.

ukromanticmaster -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:22:42 AM)

I have 2 dogs that i had within 10 mins of each other and they have never been parted i even have to take them both to the vet
at the same time !
and both dogs look after and nurse each other, im not sure if they would drag the other out of danger but the would stand over
and protect the injured one
its amazing what dogs will do

ElectraGlide -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 8:24:54 AM)

Some how, I can imagine some half-wit driving up the road with a cell phone jammed in the ear, not paying attention to their driving, hitting the dog. I can imagine some pain sadist with a big raging hard on, with a video cam in hand waiting for the moment of getting the dog slammed by a car on video. I bet that video was online a half hour after it was made. The video taker could have blocked traffic to prevent it.

I have seen people do some amazingly cruel things, though I can understand not swerving to miss an animal on a busy highway..the accident and danger to human life is too great..but not stopping is another thing. Living in Florida, road kill is a daily sight on the roads, mostly opossums, raccoons, birds, cats, dogs, deer and armadillos, rarely gators. Gators they tend to stop for as it seems only the BIG boys want to cross the road looking for girlfriends. Watched a bull gator take the tire and bumper off a police car once after the officer annoyed him by trying to get him to move and stop blocking traffic. Officer stopped traffic and let the gator decide to move on his own after that.

The ones that get me the most are the drivers who deliberately aim for gopher tortoise (s) and run over them. This cracks the  shell and without care they will die, many times even with care they will die, and they are a protected species. You can usually tell who has done it as if it is a sedan or smaller it will be sitting on the side of the road with a blown tire from the larger boys. There is no reason to do this as they are easily avoided, not like they run.

Too many people who don't own dogs and cats consider them dumb animals  incapable of thought. Those of us who live with them know that not only are the scientist wrong when they say they don't understand human speech, but that they think, reason things out, can use tools (I have watched them open doors to go out (can't get them to close them for some reason), puzzle out a problem and solve it to get something they want and mourn the loss of a companion or person. They are raised with our care and while they can't speak our language (most some can a word or two (Komodo can say Out), do understand far more than sit, stay, heel. Guide Dogs and Service dogs are remarkable in what they can learn to do and papers and TV broadcasts report constantly on dogs and cats who have called 911, awakened people and figured out how to rescue people in dangerous situations that baffle humans. It is not all instinct. I am not surprised to see this dog do his best to save his companion and reason out what needed to be done. I am just sorry that it was most likely in vain, and the result of someone DUMPING their dogs on the side of the highway figuring someone would rescue them and take them home. Thousands of animals are abandoned this way each year.

To the person who said they didn't know what language it was, it was Spanish of the style spoken in Barcelona.

tweedydaddy -> RE: Dog tries to save road kill buddy (12/3/2008 2:26:51 PM)

I'd like to find the owner and feed him his own testicles.
Or Ovaries as the case may be. Any dog deserves better.
