to be perfectly honest, I'm surprised they called it a recession. I was thinking they would keep trying to call it an economic hiccup or slowdown.

They had to call "IT" something, "IT" is getting much worse, time to give "IT" a name.

Seeing as how they hid that information and admission from us with intention I don't think a next question matters much - they aren't to be trusted. Period.

Sheesh! EVERYONE knows we're in a recession and the govt figures they have to "announce" it formally?
Mia, don't be so "depressed." Yer Man will be in power on Jan 20th!
This must be the winter of your discontent.
Once they get all those construction projects going there'll be plenty of good paying jobs out there!
People will have money again.
Buy stock in cement companies! They and other companies like them will make a killing!

No, No, No.

Our glorious leaders have already said that things will recover at the end of 2009. Now, calling our glorious leaders into question will get you arrested for conspiracy, so all together now "things will recover at the end of 2009".

Thats better

I have read so much we aren't in a "recession" talk statistically, all the while watching the stock market crash, quarterly reports not come close to expectations and my own monetary worth flatten out a bit that I was amazed that by the numbers we weren't in recession. In our industry we have have been in one for a bit longer than they are saying and I have lost some very good vendors that manufacture here in the U.S. The worst part was, it didn't take long for them to go. It seems most companies cash situation is so tenuous that survival is in doubt more rapidly than I ever thought possible.

Actually Popeye, I am fine, it's the "economy' that is spiraling down.
I am just glad they are making all these annoucements BEFORE, we get our new President.
Now, he is charged with correcting the economy, and dealing with the wars.
Popeye, seriously we are in bad shape {President elect-Obama has said this OFTEN}.
It is going to take a few YEARS to get us back on track.
There is no instant or magic bullet to fix where we are, people need to understand that.
Maybe if people realize how bad off we are, they might get a "clue" about the fact that it will
take YEARS to fix this.
We are a country used to "instant gratification", we are in a situation now that will not
be "fixed" instantly nor any time soon.
Once you understand that, you are in great shape!

Many people were very happy during slavery, and the last Depression, many people will
be happy now.

Many people have no idea what is happening Mark.
They are in shock and awe.
We have not even hit the bottom yet.
Hang on to your seatbelts, we are heading for a bumpy ride.
"The end of an era".

Hindsight is 20/20. I guess our leaders don't want to risk being wrong.

Mia, I agree and disagree.
From everything I'm seeing, hearing and reading President Obama's administration is going to "hit the ground running" on Jan 20th.
So we'll be seeing a lot of things happening right away.
There are some who are (now) saying that July/Aug of '09 should be the end of this reccession and I tend to agree with them.
The timing may be off by a few months either way but that's ok.

Of course we've been in a recession since last december anyone able to actually do the math has known this since the summer. It's too bad so many can't do the math.
