Hi,

I'm new to the board.  A sub contacted me and immediately wanted my phone number.  She was not interested in communicating by message or even Skype, phone only.  Is this a scam?  It felt pretty odd.

It's likely in my opinion that she's checking to see how serious you are. I hand mine out to pretty much anyone that wants it. My cell number that is.
Don't do it if your not comfortable with it.

Could have been as simple as she would rather talk on the phone.

It might not be a scam.

I would never ask for (or give out!!) a phone number in the first email. My concern would be about getting phone calls at ridiculous times of the day/night if that person turned out to be a complete nutjob!

People get more brave with the disposable phones situation.

It's madness to give out your number with little or no idea who you are dealing with.

My name, number and address are already listed in the phone book, as well as available on the net. So, given that virtually everyone on the planet already has access to that information, and that I have little or idea about all of them, I don't see giving it out anyone else with whom I've had a little contact to be crossing the threshold of "madness."

It could possibly be an attempt at Identity Theft. By using caller ID, they get your name and number, from there your address can be learned, then with a little more data-mining they can come up all the necessary components to assume your identity. From there the results can be devastating. It's always best to stretch it out for a while before exchanging any personal info, even as simple as the phone number. That way you can discover how serious and real the person you are talking with is.

The difference is your personal likes and dislikes are not listed in the phone book. Might be great until some religious nut takes an interest and starts harassing you endlessly by ringing you all hours. More likely though someone you’ve spurned can’t take the word no as an answer. No one can find me in the phone book, I don’t give anyone the information they need to conduct that search.

If they're so eager, why don't they give you their phone number instead. Just dial *67 before their number and it will block the caller ID signal for that one call. I am pretty sure using *67 is free, it is here.

Don't know if it's a scam, but I recently had a couple of weird ones.  The first one was a guy who said that if I would be his slave, he'd pay me $1500 per month.  The second guy gave me his phone number in the second email he sent me.  What a bunch of fruitcakes.

Could just be a scam to get you on some phone sales list, could be anyone with any motivation.

Some people just like to get things offline right away if there seems to be a rapport. I'm that way. I don't see giving out a phone number as being that big a risk.

Like someone said, phones are throw away these days.

I've had one female that has a hard time taking no for an answer, other than that, not a problem here. It's okay to consider the consequences but I won't live on what if's and chance possibilities.

Maybe they all are right..With the way this world is, it's far more likely, she wants to rape you, steal your money, kill ya and sell your body parts on the black market. Then again, she might just want to talk to ya. (If that's true what a fruitcake)

I rarely give out my number or personal information because I'm a jerk and, if there is no emotional rapport built, I don't care about you personally.

That being said, I don't want someone bugging me all the time. If I want you to be able to get ahold of me, I'll make myself available.

I'm going to second this statement plus for me it is alot more personal than talking on line and is easier for me multi-task. Plus the reality is it isn't that hard to change your number if it does become necessary.

I have a question about when you block your number and are calling a cell phone.  The number is blocked for their caller ID, but when they get that monthly bill with all the numbers that have been called or called in... is your number found there?  I always wondered about that.

Anyone without some sort of foundation for asking for my number and unrealistic reasons for requiring my number or anything else, is never going to get that information.  I would rather be careful and jaded than to hassle with someone who might decide to use my information wrongly or cause me trouble.

I am not afraid and will give my number to people.  I am very armed and very careful even at home.  I am not afriad, but I am aware and prepared.  They are not getting in without me knowing it and when and if they do get in, say my door is open in summer, I have a weapon in every room and can use even a bic razor effectively.  Daddy didn't raise no fool and he made sure we all knew how to protect ourselves.  If we didn't learn, he made us learn.  But I am not stupid enough to be over confident!  Anyone can be taken down.  So I am careful.

As for stealing my identity... would you please? hehe  Nobody wants my credit rating!  I have hospital bills!

I personally do not like giving someone I do not know well that sort of access to me when I am not on the site. I am not quick to give out my messenger names either, but thats just me.
It could be that the person asking for the number has been burned before and doesnt like online communication because of it. Maybe she was lied to and strung along by someone online and now wants a phone call to verify right off. However, you are the dominant and if it is outside your comfort zone than you tell her so. IF she pushes the subject, you know she isnt right for you.
