Thanks for all the feedback.  I understand my number is available, but I agree not to everyone in the world connected to this site.  And, it may be easy to get my number changed but I don't feel like tracking down everyone I know since I've had the same number for many years.  Yes, the person may have been burned but her answer to Skype was "it doesn't sound right".  Other than that she was unwilling to talk about ANYTHING.  It just felt all wrong, so I guess I had my answer all along!

I've tried giving people a Yahoo messenger addy and that doesn't seem to work every well. Most of them aren't comfortable chatting in Ims and seem to have difficulty typing as fast as I seem to.

Cells don't work where I live so the option is simply out. I've tried simply giving my home phone out but as a rule--people that want to really know you are very careful not to call unless you okay it first and nuts don't give a damn if it's okay or not. Soooooo now I weed out carefully.

Sage.

personally, unless there has been significant time that i have talked with someone through emails or IM, i do not give my phone out to anyone.

mostly,im not the only one living here and want to respect roomates who aren't into this and secondly i dont want just anyone ahving my number.

now if there has been a decent time talking in email or messenger then if it's brought up to echange numbers then yes,it's no issue.

but right off the bat, no.

R_T works for the FBI???  Who knew???

And to whoever asked if your blocked number shows up on a cell phone bill (I'm too lazy to go and see who it was), no it doesn't.  It will say "private" or "blocked" or something like that (depending on your carrier), but it will not reveal the number.  I don't know if *67 works on cell phones or just with some carriers, but it is supposed to work with all land lines.  I think with my cell I have to go to the options and block it before I call someone.

I don't care who has my phone number, email address etc. It's very public info.  My luck has held for many years.. if the jig's up at some point--I have no complaint as the good run has been fantastic. Not based on any data, but I think a photo, if avail, is more likely to provoke stalking or harassment.  Just an opinion from observing others in life.
Prospective subs send me their email, IM addresses, phone numbers, photos.. frequently on a first or second message. Means nothing to me, I ignore.  Later if I need them, I cannot remember where they are--so I ask for them again.  I like to keep life as simple as possible and stress levels way down.  Feel like the more you worry on something, the more likely you are either going to draw that thing to you.. or you somehow sense it's out there waiting for you.  So when people worry on something--I tend to believe they've got something to worry about, and the more illogical is sounds--the more I think it needs to be addressed now, if possible.  Can you escape your fate?  Dunno. Sometimes I think yes.. you can control outcomes.. and other times--you can't.

Ps Maybe someday I will learn how to reply to the correct person. (edited for tiny whine on incorrect "reply to")

It works with Verizon Wireless.  Dunno about other carriers.

Since I don't like talking on the phone at all, I won't give out my number early on.  If we get to the point where we want to meet face-to-face, I will exchange phone numbers prior to meeting, in case one of us needs to call to say we're running late or something.

It is supposed to work on anything considered a phone in the US. It used to be called SS7 I think, but they might be into 8 or 9 now.

*67 blocks CID

*82 sends CID on a per call basis, if you have it blocked by default, some use that when placing a takeout order for example.

*70 blocks call waiting on  per call basis, incomig calls get a busy signal until that call ends

*73, 74,75,76 and so forth have to do with call forwarding which is something you have to order and pay for

*69 dials back the last number that called your phone. Usually there is either a monthly or per use charge to use this, in some places it will call the last number that called back even if the CID information was blocked, I am not sure.

If you are worried about giving out your number there are some rather creative options available to you.

There's www.grandcentral.com register, and they assign you an internet number that rings your cell or phone or work # but does it anonymously so that the caller never knows those numbers.  There are also internet auto-dialers (grand central provides the code for them and it is an easy cut and paste) that let people dial your internet number without ever even knowing that number.  I use it, and love it, mostly because it forwards voice messages directly to my email so I can get them anywhere I am on the web.  I love talking on the phone and really like the options of this free site.

Hey Win, that site says it's a private beta program, and you have to wait for an invite from them or receive an invite from a current user.  If you're a current user, can you send me an invite?
