The car companies need to go into chapter 11, just like any other failing business. The only reason this is getting any air time is because of how much political power the unions have. They are screaming for bread and circuses through the politicians they have purchased who now owe them political favors.

You mean like AIG?  or any number of  banks now sitting on billions of dollars?

CNN estimates a total of 3.5 millions jobs depend on the auto business. While the does need to be a plan in place
this seems like an odd place to draw the line.

Are the Big Three doing a good job on their own.Seems something is amiss, what with them flying their corporate jets to Washington to plead for help...

The car companies have their own lobbyists of course.  Remember the concessions to the fuel-efficiency of SUV's?

You will notice that I did not support that either. We are simply talking the Big 3 issue right now. Frankly, while I care about the loss of jobs, bailing them out is only stalling the inevitable and draining the rest of the economy in the bargain.

One of their big issues is that they will never find a job that matches what they have now. Their salaries are grossly inflated and they, as a general rule, make twice what similar careers make. Any wonder they want to hold onto it and are screaming bloody murder?

So its the government that forces Detroit to emphasise large gas guzzling SUV's...and not short term profit margins.Don't worry about my clues Bruce, try finding some yourself...

Mike, everyone keeps saying the big 3 kept building SUV's instead of more fuel efficient cars. Pwoplw are forgetting the built what folks wanted to buy.

Till gas went way up, SUV's were what was selling

Was it government's job when Bush pushed through his tax credit plan for purchasers of SUV's?

So explain how small Japanese cars garnered such a large market share Jeffff?Detroit kept pointing out that their profit margin on smaller cars wasn't in line with what they could make selling SUV's.....of course when they stop selling, and your small fuel efficiant cars aren't competitive...your screwed.
