MsFlutter -> PHOTO SMARTS (11/20/2008 7:39:57 AM)

I was asked for my opinion on a photo. My reaction was 'meh', my response was 'not everyone is photogenic.' (I can sympathize ~ I'm not at all photogenic.)

The inquiry that followed was 'well - what makes a good photo?'  After some of the horrific shocks that have flashed by on the banners, I decided that wasn't such a goofy question.

Not that anybody would really live or die by criteria but, if a list actually existed, what would be on it?

Disclaimer ~ it is understood that some photographic details must be obscured.

* Never bad to avoid the 'just finished a 5 mile run' look  (shower/shave/put on a clean wifebeater)
* Same thing applies to 'mug shot' or 'taken during a lightning strike' photos.
* Images of naughty bits aren't usually on the top of anyone's list

Get someone else to take it. Bathroom mirror shots are full of fail.

Lockit -> RE: PHOTO SMARTS (11/20/2008 7:52:12 AM)

Oh come on... those bathroom shots with the frilly shower do hickies always bring to my mind a lil wifey peeking around the corner.  I get a good laugh from them!

If its a pic thats got a lot of habitat background, please remember that dirty undies, pizza boxes from 1982, drink can statues, and that fuzzy green mold should be cleaned, or cropped out.

Lynnxz -> RE: PHOTO SMARTS (11/20/2008 7:56:03 AM)

OOoo, make your bed before you take a pic on it, unless you're faery.

If you are going to take a bathroom mirror photo, dont wear anything with text on it... it shows up backwards and look silly.
Comb your hair!
Do not take a picture of JUST one body part, I would prefer to see who I am talking to, without having to put together the pieces like a puzzle.
If you are going to wear something sexy, make sure it fits... nothing is more unappealing than the indented lines from too-tight clothing except maybe the red lines left when they are taken back off
If you are a crossdresser and taking pictures in lengerie... shave first please! Hair poking out of a sexy lace nighty is really really not pretty.
And please, if you are going to bother to take a photo, dont do it on the lowers possible resolution so that you are just about indistinguishable. I dont want to see a pixelated mess, is no better than not having a photo up at all.

Clean the room before you take the photo!...

SteelofUtah -> RE: PHOTO SMARTS (11/20/2008 8:52:15 AM)

I have all sorts of pictures on my Profile, I like them, fuck what anyone else thinks.

As for the pictures that make me wonder, the ones where they only have one picture and it looks like they were just released from a Prison Camp. Is that really the best that they can do? out of all the pictures they took THIS was the BEST one?

Also if you are going to be taking a picture for the purpose of putting on a Networking site. Maybe put your best foor forward cause I always imagine someone picture at the very worst, if you are already looking your worst I imagine you looking 10 times worse than that and sometime I have nightmares.

All photos have two parts…The technique and the subject.

Try and tell a story with your photo...think about what you want your photo to say about you. I have noticed that many slaves look like dominants and vice versa. If you take a little time to think… with clothes, expressions and props you will convey what you are about.

For the technique be sure you have good lighting, or the lighting that will convey your purpose. If the background is cluttered use a tight framing or open you lens and blur the background.

Check your picture closely before you take the shot…Don’t have objects in the background growing out of your ear.

If the background is not part of your story find an area where the background will not distract the eye.

Remember you must be where the eyes are drawn nothing else in your picture should draw attention first. Just try this…hold your picture…shut your eyes for a minute...then look at your picture but pay attention where your eyes go FIRST…everyone else’s will as well. If your eyes don’t immediately fall on you or are led to you...as in a long road leading to a mountain...you may want to recompose the shot.

I'm going to have to perv everyone's profiles, because I am nosy and want to see all ya'lls pics.

DV's pics are nice.  I showed the one that had the small stuffed fox on Fox's head to a couple of friends.  We all agreed that was awesome!

I would agree that one needs to be mindful of the background that is going to creep into the photo.  I really don't want to see a smelly beer-can pyramid.  Or dirty socks everywhere.  Gross.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: PHOTO SMARTS (11/20/2008 11:43:36 AM)

I find Myself amazed at how many pictures seem to be taken in bathrooms.
That said, I am probably more turned off by dirty backgrounds thatn anything else.  I mean, if this is the way you live and you are not even cognizant enough to have some pride by not deliberately showing it...well?

Okay there weren't dirty socks everywhere just on her feet. And in her defence I had sent her out to the car to get my toy bag and she went out in those socks and that is why they are THAT dirty.

LOL

I'd add the following:

1.   Don't use your company mug shot - the dreadful one that's on your identity card/security pass.  It's never flattering.
2.   Don't try to look mean and moody.  You just end up looking grumpy and constipated.
3.   Make sure the background is not more interesting than you are.  I got a photo from someone, clearly taken in his living room, where I couldn't tear my eyes off the wallpaper.  It made my head spin, and I could swear I saw Osama Bin Laden's face in it if I squinted a bit.

DesFIP -> RE: PHOTO SMARTS (11/20/2008 1:15:08 PM)

I like photos that are clear, not fuzzy, don't have the cell phone held out in front, and have a clean background. Stand in front of a painted wall and have someone else take it.

I saw a great photo the other day on one of those profiles that show up when you sign on. Man in solid colored clothing sitting in a black armchair/recliner against a painted wall. Nothing written on his clothes, nothing visible in the background. Just the clothing colors, the chair, the wall and it was sharp and properly lit so no red eyes. Of course, the good impression disappeared when I read the profile!

That has to be the cutest picture I've seen on this site.
