Growing up, my mom frequently said "I could care less". I pondered that as a teenager and concluded that maybe it meant that the amount of not caring was so vast that it was actually infinite, that no matter how much you didn't care, you could keep on caring less. I honestly didn't hear it as "I couldn't care less" until I was an adult. So for me, it works either way. shrug [:)]

Thank you for posting, it's a pet peeve of mine as well. I also am irked by modified forms of 'unique' and improper uses of 'literally.'

This begs the question what is annoying. Personally, I feel that at the end of the day it is when something literally makes me burn with anger. In terms of definitions, it is something that really makes me loose my temper! Some people say I am fussy but I completely refute that.

'Fairly unique' The OED people hate that because something can't be fairly unique it either is or it isn't unique.

I have always hated; "To be completely honest..." You can usually bet that you are about to be lied to when someone says this line! I end up thinking to myself; "I was hoping you were already being honest, but now since you pointed it out, I will be sure to listen extra close.." Whatever! Ha. Amusingly, BLGirl

Phrases that annoy me: "A passenger has been taken ill." How quaint. "We are sorry for the delay this was caused by delays in the London Bridge area." WTF does that mean? It would be nice if they said what the delay that caused the delay was. You get the theme I'm going with.

"Should I expect you tommorrow?" - "I don't know." Always makes me want to ask, 'And whom should I ask?" Likewise, a blank stare when asked something inncous - 'What's your name?' 'What time should we expect you?' 'Did you have a good day today?' 'what would you like?' the blank stare always makes me say 'The questions don't get any easier'

Weather people also annoy me I have no idea what scrawley showers feel like but they sound painful. The image of scrawley showers conjures up in my mind is someone rubbing my arse cheeks with brillow pads. It's a learning curve you are either behind the curve or in front of the curve. If you stand up straight you can even be both in front and behind the curve at the same time. billo=brillow[:D]

Because "I couldn't care less" had become such a commonly-used cliche', people started using this twist on the phrase, "I could care less," in the vernacular. It's as if saying the entire phrase had become too obvious. As you perceive, "I could care less" has the opposite meaning that is usually intended, in context. I'm not usually annoyed by misuse of words and phrases, but I notice. Often misused, are words that express absolutes. For example, there is no 'kinda' to "forever," "never," "always," "completely," "unique," or "literally." Also, a misnomer is a mis-naming of, a poor name for something [see Groucho Marx, "Military intelligence is a contradiction in terms."]; it is not the same as a misconception. And, ha, mano a mano is "hand-to-hand," in Spanish, not man-to-man. The correct phrase for man-to-man would be shounen ai. No, now I'm just playin' with ya.

vicinity, innocuous, lose=to be unable to find and loose=not tight, - so much for misspellings Don't get me started. some of my favorite pet peeves turned out to be real words. doesn't that just twirk ya? and god save me from intrical - not a word, you have either integral or intricate dammit too late, i started. gonna go look at another forum, maybe i will stop. ;;-))
