missturbation -> Choice of phrase grrrrrrrrr (11/7/2008 9:07:03 AM)

Something that has irrationally really pissed me off here for along time is the use of the phrase 'i could care less'. I have always used 'i couldn't care less' and was absolutely sure that those who used the former were wrong.
Turns out i'm right and wrong [:o] as the following shows :-

quote:

I could care less!
you might say sometime in disgust. You might just as easily have said I couldn’t care less and meant the same thing! How can this be? When taken literally, the phrase I could care less means “I care more than I might,” rather than “I don’t care at all.” But the beauty of sarcasm is that it can turn meanings on their head, thus allowing could care less to work as an equivalent for couldn’t care less. Because of its sarcasm, could care less is more informal than its negative counterpart and may be open to misinterpretation when used in writing.

So turns out 'i could care less' means you care a bit.
'i couldn't care less' means you care not at all.

Please please please could we use them correctly, it irritates me, its a bug bear and it drives me crazy [:D]

kdsub -> RE: Choice of phrase grrrrrrrrr (11/7/2008 10:00:34 AM)

hmmm I could care less...may mean you could if you wanted too...lol

And could not care less... may mean you don't care at all..

What do you think?

Musicmystery -> RE: Choice of phrase grrrrrrrrr (11/7/2008 10:02:05 AM)

"I would tend to agree."

Oh...would you? Under what circumstances?

Or DO you?

I hate "irregardless". Not sure I could care less about "could" or "couldn't care less".....[:D]

We all have our weird issues. The dude that lives with me says the "irregardless" and pronounces illegal, eelegal......which drives me totally batshit and I glare at him and correct him, every time. Which drives him crazy. He also talks too loud when he is discussing something he feels passionately about. That is often. He is a loud, dramatic person. I am easily annoyed by loud, dramatic, people. Occasionally I give him hell about it but usually I just tune him out. Leaving the immediate vacinity works wonders also.

djaleksandr -> RE: Choice of phrase grrrrrrrrr (11/7/2008 1:15:39 PM)

Fixin' to.  As in, "I'm fixin' to go to the store, do you need anything?"

Wait, you're doing what? You're repairing the store?  Well, that's very nice of you, and actually, it would be grand if you would repair my sink, which drips, and some of the sheet rock down stairs still wrecked from Gustav.

I live in the South (USA), so I hear this phrase a lot.  It doesn't bother me when it happens occasionally (hey, it is the South, and drunkenness happens).  But when people say it constantly, it kinda irks me.  Not enough to ever correct anyone.  Unless I'm not fond of them.  Then I want to hand them a hammer and some nails and tell them 'godspeed!'

Anarrus -> RE: Choice of phrase grrrrrrrrr (11/7/2008 1:19:25 PM)

It's all an irrelevant concern to me ...... ; -)
