OrionTheWolf -> Obama's first International Test (11/5/2008 7:21:40 PM)

Just hours after the announcement of President Obama Elect having won the election, his first test of international affairs begins.

"MOSCOW — President Dmitri A. Medvedev of Russia greeted his future American counterpart, Senator Barack Obama, with bristling language on Wednesday, promising to place short-range missiles on Russia’s western border if Washington proceeded with its planned missile defense system in Eastern Europe. "

Suddenly the old Soviet Union doesn't look so bad, does it?

Musicmystery -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/5/2008 7:26:00 PM)

Just for the hell of it---George Bush is still the President until Jan. 20.

Don't think he doesn't know it.

kittinSol -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/5/2008 7:28:14 PM)

(Bingo.)

HunterS -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/5/2008 7:30:02 PM)

Fast reply:
What would one expect Medvedev to do when we place missiles on his doorstep?  What would you do if your next door neighbor mounted twin .50's on his fence facing you?

The announcement specifically names Senator Obama.

Convince them to point them elsewhere.

Yes, and it's not for nothing that the threats are made today, when Bush is still around (I think I saw him for a few seconds on the news today, but perhaps it was his body double? You never know where he is, nowadays) and not on January 20th . Not the friendliest thing to do, considering Obama's election, but as you remark accurately, Russia doesn't want to be shat on either.

So you would be OK with your neighbor mounting the twin .50's on the fence so long as they were pointed not directly at you?

This means, of course, that Joe Biden was correct....

(sorry...I just couldn't resist)

We'll have to wait until January for the next episode. Ah, the suspense! It will be real interesting to see how Obama deals with the international environment.

rexrgisformidoni -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/5/2008 7:43:32 PM)

The Bear grumbles. They've got 3 new ballistic missle subs launching in the next 2 years. a new icbm that very little is known about other than it seems to be very accurate. and an airforce of freshly upgraded bombers that can do basically what they want...I hope obama can hack it.

Ahhh...i had grown nostalgic for the days when our wars were cold....they are so much more profitable and less deadly.  (all the best Bond movies were during that time...)

So I bring this up six months ago when the whole thing started and NOW you want to talk about it. Fuck that.

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/5/2008 8:33:40 PM)

I do not have any problem with his other guns, so why would I have a problem with those? Hell if I asked he would even let me shoot them. Now maybe if my neighbor was a religious nutcase, that believed he would be rewarded in heaven for killing me, then I might have a problem.

You are doing the ol "texas two step" here  which is uncharacteristic of you.  We are talking about the U.S. and Russia.  You being Russia and your neighbor being the U.S.  He has no intention of letting you shoot his gun.  He has it on the fence and while he says it is really to shoot at someone else you and he have a long history of pissing in each others back yard.
If you want to dance with me then you need indoor plumbing.
How about a dose of your regular candor instead of this line of bs.
The .50's are pointed at you and they are cocked and locked and ready to rock.  Fuck no he is not going to let you shoot them.  You know as well as he does that they are not intended for anything except to fuck with you.
You would do exactly what Medvedev is doing.
This is exactly what happened in Cuba 45 years ago.  We put missiles in Turkey ...Russia put missiles in Cuba.  Johnboy told Nikkie to get his shit out of dodge and Nikkie told Johnboy to go fuck himself..."you take your missiles out of Turkey and I will take my missiles out of Cuba."
Same shit different day.

meatcleaver -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/6/2008 1:18:29 AM)

Russia is making a rational response to American aggression.

Just imagine the US's response if Russia was siting missiles on the US border.

SilverMark -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/6/2008 3:09:08 AM)

Russia is going to be a HUGE issue for our new President. Putin is still running the show and is still KGB through and through!
I think he has a bit of a "Manifest Destiny" complex and wishes to unbreak up the USSR....With George's wold political capitol at an all
time low he can indeed rattle the Russian saber and with our far flung adventures as they are not much we can do with any conviction.
Face it, our military is not in the shape it was prior to Bush and Russia is indeed VERY dangerous!

meatcleaver -> RE: Obama's first International Test (11/6/2008 4:09:52 AM)

SilverMark. The Russian economy is minute compared to the EU's, something akin to the size of London's economy, never mind the USA's. It has a population of 150 million compared to the EU's 500 million. Most European analysts are of the mind the Russian intervention in Georgia, which is agreed here, that Georgia provoked by attacking unarmed Russian civilians, was more about the weakness of Russian in response to the US plans to place missiles on the Russian border. NATO didn't want the missiles so the US is unilaterally going ahead with placing them, bribing both the Polish and Czech governments who are going against their own people's wishs according to the polls (70% against in both countries). This has caused a lot of arguments and had the effect of destabilizing Europe somewhat. Most Europeans and between the lines, most governments (not Britain) think that the US is the problem and not Russia which is why the vast mojority of Europeans wanted Obama to win rather than a Bush warmongering clone. Whether Obama knows what is happening in Europe or whether once he is in power he won't care or he is forced to carry on with the placing of missiles by the US military-industrial complex, we will have to wait and see. If Obama just becomes just another President that is trying to divide and rule Europe for purely US aggressive purposes, he won't be popular for long here.

I'll be teaching some Russians along with some Germans later this afternoon, such mixing is not unusual now so the idea of Russia being the old USSR doesn't wash here and US scare mongering and paranoia, just alienates people. Hopefully Obama will take a rational approach to the west's relationship with Russia rather than the usual reflex paranoia that we have come to expect from the US in the last eight years.
