Pathetic offenses make even slow, average defenses look good. Both quarterbacks were really bad ... I don't think either could hit the ground with a brick.

Penn State's "pathetic offense" averages over 40 points per game just like all those mighty Big 12 offenses; Penn State and Ohio State have top 10 scoring defenses, while UT is the best in the Big 12 but only 28th in the nation.

Lousy defenses make all those Big 12 offense look good, and we see them slow way down when they encounter even a mediocre D.  So nice try talking smack, but there is no substance to it.

caitlyn -> RE: College football (10/26/2008 7:58:29 AM)

It's not smack talk ... it's reality as proven by the last few championship games, and matchups between top teams from various conferences. Ohio State's mighty defense looked VERY slow against USC earlier this year.

Right now (with emphasis on "right now") there are so many good schools up north, that the talent pool is spread around more than it used to be. Schools like Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State are just not as talented as they used to be. There isn't a quarterback in the Big-Ten that would be likely to even compete to start on a top SEC or Big-12 teams. Pryor will be good in a few years, but we are talking right now.

So, I'm standing on it ... if Penn State or Ohio State played in the Big-12 South, they would be a two or three conference loss team. They simply don't have a quarterback that will hurt anyone, and teams would stack up to stop the run. Their secondary is too slow, and lacks enough depth to matchup with spread offenses. They would not get away with stacking the line of scrimmage to stop the run with the stable of quarterbacks and receivers that more powerful conferences have to offer.

That said, Penn State is more likely to end up in a championship game than teams from either the SEC or Big-12. I'm having a hard time seeing Texas winning out. Same for Alabama. We will probably get something like Penn State and USC, and USC will beat them something like 35-7.

By the way, I have no axe to grind here. I attend Rice University, and Penn State would beat us by a billion points. I'm just pointing out what anyone looking at it objectively already knows ... the top southern schools are just generally better "right now."

Before the season even began they threw the starting QB off the team, and it looks like he took the defense with him.

Some other players have been angry that he was let go..feel it led to their "stock" dropping for NFL potential. It will be better next year, though it will take time to rebuild.
I have faith in our coach and his Lesticles!

Geaux Tigers!

Right now on ESPN, Boise State, who went 12 - 0 this season and has never been behind in the second half this year, is ahead in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego at the start of the third quarter.

Great game though - they're letting the Texas Hornfrogs think they have a chance of winning...

heh . . . looks like TCU made those two early turnovers to make the Broncos think they had a chance of winning. After that their defense shut them down.

Maybe Boise State could have won if they had rushed for more than 28 yards, or if their defense could have stopped TCU from running it down their throats all night long. Really, they were just outclassed, and it was only close because of TCU's blunders.
