HOUDINI1961 -> KINKY KANJI TATTOOS NEEDED, HELP! (10/21/2008 1:47:28 PM)

hi, can someone lead me in the right direction?

i have been googling my butt off for hours trying to find Kanji/Japanese/Asian symbols for:

bondage

hogtie(hogtied)

slave

rope(roped)

bound

chained.

etc. anything do with bondage or being bound/tied up.

I'm finally getting the tattoo i want on my upper center back so it can show when i am wearing a tank top. i know i can get any symbol and tell people it means bondage but i really want the REAL thing.

anyone know how to find Kanji or
Asian symbols for bondage, et al., kinky terms?

i'm sure i'm not the first one wanting this type of tattoo.

thanks very much.

When you do find it, get it doublechecked.

Nothing worse than thinking you have "Slave" on your back, when it really means "I have a rampaging case of the soup-dick"

Ask a college professor, if it's not too awkward for you.

Try and international Translation Site.

That's what I did. I usually cross reference with a couple different ones to see if they come up with the same thing.

If you know someone that knows the actual language that is always better tho.

There are japanese calligraphers who create work to be used for tattoos.  Unless you want some cookie cutter kanji you might want to drop the coin and get a true one of a kind work of art designed specifically for you.  Erik Takase is one example but there are others.

Actually, I saw one of those once and it was just as ours often are, messed up.  It said FRUNK in nice block letters.  It was supposed to mean something in English.  The person described this as having something to do with the soul, but I can't remember exactly what,  as it certainly isn't actually an English word for anything.

Ok, the main problem being that not all our words translate into what you are seeking. When i went to the tat place they have the slave one on their boards :) Your best bet atm is to try and look through the books they have. I have Master with slave under it on my neck. Found em both on their boards and when i checked em, they were what they were suppose to!   Good luck...here is one site with a ton of them :)

Don't go by what's written in the shopworn booklet in the tat parlor.  I've seen the most grotesque mistakes in those.  And some of the characters aren't even written properly.  People, it stands to reason that you should ask an expert before getting something TATTOOED onto your body.  I remember a girl who thought she had "slave" written on her lower back.  It really said "kitchen boy."

MadameMarque -> RE: KINKY KANJI TATTOOS NEEDED, HELP! (10/21/2008 4:33:31 PM)

Please, please, consult with a native speaker of Japanese, before getting something tattooed on you in poorly translated, broken Japanese, for all eternity.

You want someone to help you get the nuance of what you're trying to say, correctly.  Machine translations can be so off in their literal translation that it's laughable.  Even a single word, though it may literally translate into the one you want, might have a different, more common meaning or association, in Japanese.

Do a search on the other side, CM, for members in Japan, and write a couple of people who seem functionally bilingual and nice, a polite note with your request for their expert assistance.

(And I suppose you've heard the horror stories of westerners being tattooed with kanji that meant something ridiculous and not what the wearer intended, at all.  So, be certain.  XD )

...and yes, I have seen Japanese boys tattooed with phrases in broken English.

That's a great idea.

Sure, but there are so many Asian fonts available now that if you have half a clue about what you're doing, you can get lovely printouts (in a variety of different styles) for $Free.

Slightly off topic but I wasn't aware that the Japanese version of let's say a 'Sottish person is a Scot' for example is derogatory.

Anyway what I was trying to say before my post got deleted is ask a Japanese person!
Aren't there any sushi restaurants near you?

Elenaconfined -> RE: KINKY KANJI TATTOOS NEEDED, HELP! (10/21/2008 6:21:54 PM)

Used to work for an artist. One day a kid came in angry as can be. The tat he had just gotten was suposed to be the word "Wizard". He went to a Japanese friend to show off and found out it was "Dog". We looked in our flash book and the only meaning we had for it was Wizard. The moral? don't take any meaning from a Flash Art Book. If you find the one you're looking for check it again and again. (We chucked out the book by the way. One life long mistake was enough.)
