WASHINGTON – Colin Powell will have a role as a top presidential adviser in an Obama administration, the Democratic White House hopeful said Monday.
"He will have a role as one of my advisers," Barack Obama said on NBC's "Today" in an interview aired Monday, a day after Powell, a four-star general and President Bush's former secretary of state, endorsed him.

There's already a thread about this.

juliaoceania -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 6:06:43 AM)

I thought that was a thread about Powell endorsing Obama...

This thread is not about that... if you read the article...

Unless there is some other thread I have missed

bipolarber -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 6:29:32 AM)

That seems odd. In the MTP interview where he endorsed the sane candidate, he was quite adamamnt that he'd had quite enough of White House politics. He DID say he'd be happt to advise Obama if asked, but that he had no intention of holding an offical cabinet position.

Personally, I like to see this sort of diversity and having a conservative viewpoint will help ensure (I hope) a more global (as opposed to world) viewpoint for the good of our country. It's a real 'reaching across the aisle' sorta thing. If Obama gets into office, we'll have a leader with integrity and Powell will be able to do his job the way he could have done it the first time by giving advice to someone who will put some thoughtful consideration into that advice and, in my opinion, make the right decisions on what's best for us.

True that.

What better person to repair the damage he helped to create.

It`s possible,IMO that he can eventually rehabilitate himself.

He`ll propably know where there`s a few bodies buried, as well.

It's just one more reason not to vote for Obama...

As if those not voting for Obama need "another"reason....

I'm shocked!  The Obama campaign actually said that..in public?  And Powell, who is still a "republican" (burp), obviously will accept any such position to serve his country once again.  God Bless our military people....the men and woman in Iraq must be so proud today of their former Joint Chief for this endorsement of Obama as their next CIC.

proudsub -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 4:04:48 PM)

I'm not voting for Obama, but since he will probably get elected, i would feel much better about it if Powell were secretary of Defense.

Actually, Joe Biden should keep riding the Amtrak and move over and let Powell  take over asVice President.  Now that would be a ticket!  Fantasy...but an historic, interesting ticket.

I don't understand the lack of experience argument it's as if people think leaders don't have advisors and therefore have to make all their decisions on their own without opinions from others around them. Obama added to his experience stock with Biden and now with Powell. McCain on the other hand has added lack of experience to his unarguable experience. If something was to happen to him Palin would take over, if something happens to Obama then Biden takes over, what option would people prefer? You see on one hand you have a candidate who supposedly has no experience but he is still wise enough to realise he can't do it all alone or add dead weight to his advisors for political reasons.

Sanity -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 4:34:37 PM)

Without doing a thing the Obama ticket has the one who has no experience at the top, making the choice obvious (if it were to be made by that standard).

Like Obama, Palin could find people who have experience to lean on easily enough

Would she though? Is her leadership style collaborative?

Yes, her leadership style is collaborative. She tells people what to do, and if they don't execute her orders, she sacks them.

julia! A co-worker and I were having a very similar discussion today.
I was saying that I would not be surprised if Colin Powell obtained a position
in the Obama Administration!
I will be glad to see this.

Redemption is indeed possible!
Welcome back to the fold, Colin Powell!

Vendaval -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 8:21:55 PM)

I am very happy about the endorsement and the potential for Mr. Powell to serve in another Presidential cabinet.

bestbabync -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 8:23:28 PM)

Sen.Obama has been in contact with Colin Powell for months.  this is not new.  Obama has been seeking advice from Colin Powell through his entire campaign.  just like bipolarber states Colin Powell has no desire to serve in any administration.

Sanity -> RE: Obama: Powell will have role in admin... (10/20/2008 8:25:27 PM)

I recall the way so many Democrats used to talk about him, calling him "Colon" and calling Colin Powell and Condi Rice Bush's token or house _____s. Couldn't mention him without turning their heads and spitting and blaming him for Mai Lai.

But now he's just the most stellar guy.

Of course.

Many of us are capable of forgiving and forgetting.
Mr. Powell did not INITIALLY realize, that President Bush was the type of person that
he turned out to be.
President Bush surely is one of the worse Presidents in history.
This is a surely his chance for redemption!
