Has anyone listened to "The American" by Gordon Sinclair  lately. I think after all of these years it still applies to today.

You might find this of interest, Raymond.  It lists the numbers killed in WWII.  Please note the paltry number of American casualties as a percentage of population compared to, say, the French, the British and, especially, another ally, the Soviet Union.  Of course, the Americans showed up two years after the war started, because they were content to let others die in a war the winning of which was of direct benefit to them.  I've noted, though, how often Americans like to pat themselves on the back that they "saved" Europe.  If they'd shown up when everyone else did, there might be some claim to that.  As it was, they only helped to finish the job that others had started.  Incidentally, my father, an American who saw action during the war, agreed.

If I recall American helped Europe in 2 wars. So to you thousands of American deaths is paltry.  You should be glad your not speaking German or Japanese. Are you learning Arabic now.

I think that if Obama gets in we will finaly stay out of wars. Mmm look at all the stock markets around the world falling. For someone hating America they sure had a lot invested in it.

Are you saying if we did not help finish the job you started then you would have won anyway?? We did not want in that war anyway. If it wans't for Japan we probably would of left it alone. Russia was ready to finish it anyway.

Raymond, twisting someone's words to win an argument is worthy of someone like McCain.  I didn't say it was paltry in an absolute sense, I said it was paltry in comparison.  Of course, when you can't win an argument, one does tend to distort the truth.  As far as foreign languages go, I speak French very well, my reading Spanish is good, my Italian is rusty, I can manage a few words in German, I took Japanese for a year, and tried teaching myself Arabic, but I couldn't get the hang of the script.  A friend taught me to read Hebrew and understand a few words of that.

How many foreign languages do you speak, Raymond?

And I don't see what the financial problems in the world right now have to do with Gordon Sinclair's 35-year-old piece of writing, which is, after all, what this thread is about.  Given that the financial problems have been largely caused by the mortgage crisis in the United States, the financial crisis should lay to rest any thought that Americans are any better than anyone else.

Edited to add that my comments are directed more to Raymond than in a general sense.  Raymond and I have had private correspondence, where Raymond refuses to admit that there's anything wrong with the US and that every other country is nothing more than a shit-hole.  His statements are unsustainable by even cursory research, so I feel the need to encourage him to keep a more open mind about things.  It's for his own good.  Really.

There's none. It's just mindless, fear-based jingoism we're hearing. It's so much easier than actually thinking.

If the Axis had won WWII, we'd all be speaking commie talk, my droogies.

Wow! What a blast from the past. I was still living in Michigan when that was current. You are right! In fact, it's even funnier now.

Bob

Now who is distorting. Must be a sarah wannabe. I don't think all other countries are shit holes.  Before anyone gets the wrong impression Venatrix and I are not at war with each other. I am proud of who I am. Why should I be ashamed of being an American? What other country can tell me that they are better off. What makes that country better off. If there is one. Why is everyone migrating here  and not there?

Already checked it out. I don't know shit about European archaeology, otherwise I'd be living in one of the many places with a better standard of living (yes, Americans...gasp...there are such places), like Denmark, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany....

Scandinavia seems a good place to be ;)

but al people want America....although Norther Africa seems to prefer Italy and Spain...in the same way as Mexicans go to the USA.

Personally I am happy where I am..I have everything..perhaps when I had nothing...I would want to leave.

I suppose...if you think things like average life span, infant mortality, prenatal care, unwanted pregnancies, literacy, murder rates, environmental quality, individual freedom and privacy, and education are important. Otherwise, what do the Scandinavian countries have to offer, really?

I guess you could say most countries without an Army is a good place to live. Your GNP is not going to finance any war effort. If you don't mind having a gun in your house Switzerland is a good place to live.
