Mostly we default to 2 parties simply because it becomes very difficult to establish a mandate of opinion when you have more than an either/or choice. We have other people running, even today. But they aren't taken seriously, except as "spoilers" who suck votes from one side or the other, throwing the election to the opposition. Ross Perot, for one example, and Ralph Nader for another. (Is Ralph still in the race?)

Does that mean there are just 3 parties then?
If there is no choice between parties...they parties don't have towork very hard..I guess.
Peopel often vote out of habbit .
Some more parties will force them to work harder, so people can recoqnize them.

(although I admit that soemtimes the overview in my country is lost with all those parties)

There are dozens of parties in this country.  The Nazis and Communists even still get on the ballot.  Its just that people are brainwashed that voting anything but dem or pub is "throwing away your vote."  In truth, if they would just vote their conscience rather than partisan garbage, we might elect a decent president.
