Musicmystery -> Negative Campaigning---are we just that stupid? (10/12/2008 3:32:41 PM)

Hey all,

Conventional wisdom repeats the sad news---negative campaigns work.

Why? Are we so easily manipulated?

Data indicates so. But why? Or is it all the other people, just not all of us?

And if we all hate it, why don't we stop embracing it?

Oh yeah. It works.

Or does it? Why?

It doesn't work on me at all, unless the goal is to get me to detest them.

Unfortunately it works very well on others, especially on people that make their judgement of a candidate based upon sensationalistic, sound bite journalism.

It makes me think of Equirer magazine. Sadly, too many people believe both.

mistoferin -> RE: Negative Campaigning---are we just that stupid? (10/12/2008 4:00:35 PM)

The minute that they start slamming their opponent I just tune right out. I can not understand why anyone would choose one candidate because he points out all of the shortcomings of the other. I want to hear what you can do for me...not what candidate B did or didn't do.

Here's a thought.

To read the responses so far, we just don't listen.

Yet results show that we do. Just look at the posts on this board.

Back to the original question.

Some of us listen. But some of us dig a little deeper, do a little research, to find out just who is telling the lies.

"
We find McCain’s accusation that Obama “lied” to be groundless. It is true that recently released records show half a dozen or so more meetings between the two men than were previously known, but Obama never denied working with Ayers.
Other claims are seriously misleading. The education project described in the Web ad, far from being “radical,” had the support of the Republican governor and was run by a board that included prominent local leaders, including one Republican who has donated $1,500 to McCain’s campaign this year. The project is described by Education Week as reflecting “mainstream thinking” about school reform.
Despite the newly released records, there’s still no evidence of a deep or strong “friendship” with Ayers, a former radical anti-war protester whose actions in the 1960s and ’70s Obama has called “detestable” and “despicable.” "

I haven't seen this mudslinging from the Obama campaign.

For some reason it is easier for most people to think the worst of others. That is my opinion at least.

Specifically, what "negative campaigning" are we talking about.  From what I have heard, this campaign is rather tame compared to some in the recent and long ago past.  Presidential Politics is a game played by big boys..."negative campaigning"...??  If a guy running for the top office in the land can't take the heat withhout whinning and whimpering like a sissy, maybe he's the wrong guy...dontcha think??  wink wink...

I think you just answered the question.

People like to spin facts and statements into perversions that weren't there to serve their own prejudices, knowingly framing the question into something it never was.

Enjoy.

There's an old saying in law.

When the law's on your side, pound on the law.

When the facts are on your side, pound on the facts.

When neither are on your side, pound on the table.

And all these "Ayers-Obama Connection" lies piss me off. The lead prosecutor of the Weathermen back in 1972 is none too happy, either,

" As the lead federal prosecutor of the Weathermen in the 1970s (I was then chief of the criminal division in the Eastern District of Michigan and took over the Weathermen prosecution in 1972), I am amazed and outraged that Senator Barack Obama is being linked to William Ayers’s terrorist activities 40 years ago when Mr. Obama was, as he has noted, just a child.
Although I dearly wanted to obtain convictions against all the Weathermen, including Bill Ayers, I am very pleased to learn that he has become a responsible citizen.
Because Senator Obama recently served on a board of a charitable organization with Mr. Ayers cannot possibly link the senator to acts perpetrated by Mr. Ayers so many years ago.
I do take issue with the statement in your news article that the Weathermen indictment was dismissed because of “prosecutorial misconduct.” It was dismissed because of illegal activities, including wiretaps, break-ins and mail interceptions, initiated by John N. Mitchell, attorney general at that time, and W. Mark Felt, an F.B.I. assistant director.

ScooterTrash -> RE: Negative Campaigning---are we just that stupid? (10/13/2008 2:27:43 AM)

From what I have seen in the most recent "ads" placed on television, if you weren't going to listen to the negatives, you wouldn't have an opportunity to listen at all. It's like the two candidates have decided that they don't have anything worthwhile to offer, so throwing stones seems to be the only way to play. "Pick me, I'm not as bad as the other guy"....wierd way to campaign if you ask me.
