socialism raised its head and threatened revolution

'Just another idea driven by the problems of the day.

If socialism is just another idea born out of problems driven by the day, how do you think conservative and liberal philosophies started?

Exactly, Meat. Ideas are borne out of the probems of the day.

Since there is no evidence whatsoever that war is man's natural state

War is a constant in history; as is mutual aid.

There have been societies that have been encountered that didn't have the concept of war. I admit they didn't last long after their encounter with the west but the fact that they existed proves that humans are not hardwired for war.

There is also a language (in New Guinea I believe) in which it is impossible to lie, which points to the people who speak the language of not having the concept of lying to each other. That is not to say, an intuitive ability to deceive isn't present.

Just because a behaviour is encountered in 99% of societies, doesn't mean humans are hardwired into that behaviour.

Someone in this thread mentioned being conservative in economic policies and liberal in social ones.  Both ways of governing have strengths and weaknesses.  Perhaps being registered as an Independent voter the best way to express support or lack thereof for a particular policy or candidate?

(We have a number of Independents, Libertarians and Green party members that post in the political threads and I am curious to hear their replies.)

In my state (NY), registering as an independent would prevent me from voting in the primaries.

So you have to choose?  That does not seem right to me.
