There's good advice here. I've seen nylon and leather in use, used leather and am on a waiting list now for a pair of nylon whips. If you ever get to 1763 in Atlanta, there's a man there who does an awesome black-light whipping scene. He uses both nylon and leather. I don't think nylon will ever replace leather as the standard, but there are a couple of things to think about up front. Mistress Whip runs the dungeon. Look them up and shoot her an email. She probably wouldn't mind putting you in contact. Good leather whips are expensive. Good nylon whips can be purchased for about a fouth/fifth of the cost. Aside from just being easier to throw, most houses don't really have the room in them to work the larger whips. Unless you're going to working it outside, 4-5' range is probably best. And if you are going to be using it outside, nylon starts to have some real advantage over leather as it's not so sensitive, nor damaged by moisture. The cracker at the end is what your target is going to be feeling. Look it over. Most are fairly short. The good thing is there's not much mass in that little tuft of twine. The bad thing is, it's fairly short. If you replace it with a longer cracker, and work with that, you'll keep the leather fall further from your target. Either way, I'd spend some time talking to someone who has been doing it a while... and expect to be on a waiting list when ordering a whip.
