Sunnyfey -> On Whips. Singletails or Bullwhips (9/23/2008 2:06:29 AM)

Been wanting to learn how to throw a whip for awhile now, Anyone know a good type to start with? Nylon or Leather? Snakewhip or Bullwhip?  4 ft or 5 ft?

Side note: just incase it matters (im sure it might) I'm about 5'6-5'7 personally I want to throw it into my carnival act for one, and another because frankly its a good scare tactic for a particular sub of mine, and on the other side of it, I adore a good once over with a nice whip.

for more control when starting out, i'd suggest a shorter whip, and definately leather, but what do i know, i've never done it myself

Victor Tella has a nice demo DVD out, and his 4 foot snake whips are nice.

To start with, use a shorter whip, definitely. And try out different weights and materials to see what handles best for you.

A well made nylon whip is light and can be easier on the wrist when learning if one does not have alot of wrist strength. A bull has a handle so to some ,it is easier to direct and pop. I like short snakes and signals as learner whips as they are short and easier to learn to aim. Keep in mind though that whips with non removable crackers "poppers" are great to use but can be a problem if you use them on multiple people in play scenarios. Since whip crackers do come in contact with peoples skin and pick up fluids, alot of people use whips with removable crackers for sanitary reasons. My recommendation to you would be to find a whip enthusiast group in your area that meets and allows newcomers to pick up and handle a variety of whips to "test drive". That way you cannot only learn from such a group to throw a whip, you will also "hopefully" find one that fits your preference and style of play. That or find a whip mentor in your area who would be willing to teach you their style of whip throwing so you can find your own. Good luck with this pursuit.

FR - This is the one that I started out with and it's still my favourite:  http://www.mr-s-leather.com/W84.html

I bought the two-foot one, though it is actually closer to three feet with the handle.  It doesn't take long to develop accuracy with it.  Once you're comfortable with this, you can trade up to a larger one.  Under no circumstances would I try to start out with one longer than four feet, total, and even that is rather unwieldy for a beginner.

Quite right too, the signal whips with plaited in crackers are pretty obsolete here in the ~UK~ infact I've not sold a traditional signal for years....not since I started doing signals with changeable crackers....

In my humble opinion, a 4 foot leather whip is best. Make sure the weave is tight and the quality is high. Expect to spend a few dollars on it.

Find someone who is considered skilled with the whip and ask to be Mentored. There is more to a single tail scene than just being able to throw the whip.

My own Mentor (a very experienced Dom)  had me practice for several months on inanimate objects (destroyed more than a few cushions), and the emphasis was on consistent accuracy.

When I thought I was ready to use it on a human, I knew that my Mentor would be the first to bottom for me, so the pressure was there to make sure I was ready.

Sunnyfey -> RE: On Whips. Singletails or Bullwhips (9/23/2008 1:32:40 PM)

Im not actually comfortable useing them on my sub, as he is not particularly into pain play in any fashion. Go figure, pain play is my forte, but hes been the best sub for me, and its made me become more creative in my dominace. So the plan isnt to use one on a human anytime soon, or an animal for that matter. Personally, I wanted to do this without my whip enthusist friend, the fact is hes my Leather Sir, I wanted to do this on my own so I can present and impress him with short little routine to show my dedication to him. (no he is NOT my Master, hes been my best friend for some odd like 10 years or so) So, I want to keep it super secret...hehehe.

Using a single tailed whip on another person is a long learning process. If you apply patience and lots of practice, 6 months to a year would be a good estimate IMO. Learning a few flashy moves and cracks wont take you long though. Finding someone to teach you will make the learning process much faster. Just so you know.. someone who is skilled at the singletail can use it to do everything from tickling up to cutting the skin. Its all about control and practice practice practice. :)

Wise words and yes I concur. I both use and receive singletails and my favorite to use is my 4ft, 12 plait bullwhip. Whips can either kiss or do real damage and I have a healthy respect for them.
Starting out I would suggest you wear a wide brimmed hat and a pair of goggles if you have them. Safety is paramount and its not unheard of for people to lose an ear or an eye through inexperience.
Practice makes for competence and after a while you'll find the whips stop fighting back and you'll get what you aim at.

Start with a four foot snake with a single tail. My first whip was given to me by my Grandpa, he told me to step away and hold out my arm. I did and he snapped me! OMG the pain!! Then he told me, remember that before you ever play around someone with it. That stuck with me forever. Practice Practice Practice and then practice some more. Just start easy and on inanimate objects. Once you get hooked on a whip, its really hard to put down!

StrangerThan -> RE: On Whips. Singletails or Bullwhips (9/24/2008 2:27:42 AM)

There's good advice here. I've seen nylon and leather in use, used leather and am on a waiting list now for a pair of nylon whips. If you ever get to 1763 in Atlanta, there's a man there who does an awesome black-light whipping scene. He uses both nylon and leather. I don't think nylon will ever replace leather as the standard, but there are a couple of things to think about up front. Mistress Whip runs the dungeon. Look them up and shoot her an email. She probably wouldn't mind putting you in contact.

Good leather whips are expensive. Good nylon whips can be purchased for about a fouth/fifth of the cost. Aside from just being easier to throw, most houses don't really have the room in them to work the larger whips. Unless you're going to working it outside, 4-5' range is probably best. And if you are going to be using it outside, nylon starts to have some real advantage over leather as it's not so sensitive, nor damaged by moisture. The cracker at the end is what your target is going to be feeling. Look it over. Most are fairly short. The good thing is there's not much mass in that little tuft of twine. The bad thing is, it's fairly short. If you replace it with a longer cracker, and work with that, you'll keep the leather fall further from your target.

Either way, I'd spend some time talking to someone who has been doing it a while... and expect to be on a waiting list when ordering a whip.

If your goal is to learn to handle a whip more for noise and tricks I'd suggest you take a look at a 6-8 foot bullwhip. The longer length makes everything happen a little more slowly and the rigid handle gives you excellent directional control. If you get very good with it you can play with your sub but its a long process and a lot of practice to get to that point.

If your goal is ultimately to be able to play with whips in a scene the 3-4 foot signal whips are your best choice. Get a kangaroo one if you can afford it but nylon is a great second choice. With a little bit of coaching and a few hours of practice you'll be ready to do some low intensity work with a live target.

Most events and some Dungeons have length limits on whips they allow to be used in their environs. Usually the limit is 6 foot "total" or less. Might also keep that in mind when looking for one to use. :-)

I personally prefer a 3 or 4 foot 16 plait signal whip. Kangaroo hide is the very best.
Whips are SOOO fun and quite impressive to watch in action. My favorite whipmasters can throw double florentine, which looks like a lovely and intricate dance.
