The idea is that you know what you are ordering without seeing the produce, hence class 1 bananas have to be of a certain standard and class 2 can be of any standard (as long as they are fresh and fit to eat.) Though all Europeans who are anti-EU conveniently miss the point too so why shouldn't an American.
