Sanity -> Europe EU wants to ban 'sexist' TV commercials? (9/6/2008 7:42:31 AM)

(Telegraph) -

MEPs want TV regulators in the EU to set guidelines which would see the end of anything deemed to portray women as sex objects or reinforce gender stereotypes.

This could potentially mean an end to attractive women advertising perfume, housewives in the kitchen or men doing DIY.

Such classic adverts as the Diet Coke commercial featuring the bare-chested builder, or Wonderbra's "Hello Boys" featuring model Eva Herzigova would have been banned.

The new rules come in a report by the EU's women's rights committee.

WTF?

There must be some extremely ugly women running the show over there, is all I can imagine!

One legislator proposing something does not equal the entire EU supporting this.
Besides it would seem impossible to implement. If a study shows that the target audience for kitchen appliances is female, then it is not stereotyping to address an ad to your audience.

Most places have silly laws still in place that are never enforced.

It wont pass....after 9pm in Germany, the commercials are basically porn...what would people do for fun?

Ever been to France, Sanity? Over there, they'd show tits on television to sell vacuum cleaners.

Here in America, they actually 'beep' over the word 'shit'. They won't show people making love, but they'll shower the viewers with all sorts of violence and hate (including in the middle of the day, when it's completely inappropriate).

So, if you have some problems with television censorship, why not start at home? God knows it could do with a little updating [8|] .

Yes, we tend to be more ass-backwards over here, regarding sex.

I'm moving to France,I love vacuum cleaners!!!!

I've never liked those commercials for open door baths for elderly people. I for one am a lazy bastard and would like one of those baths where I don't have to lift my leg more than four inches.[8|]

but but I feel they are only for elderly people because there are no young women getting in and out of the open door baths.

therefore I propose open door bath adverts should include at least one young woman getting in and out of the bath to offset this ageism.

Indeed, and the level of puritanism is astounding regarding the human body in general, not just sex. So they'll show incredible violence, people dying, corpses, murder, car crashes, think "Roman Games", but they won't show a naked human body. WTF?

Sanity's worried because of a Daily Telerag article. The Telerag's always been fiercely anti European, so they'll jump at pretty much anything to try and rally their troups against the Union. See this: "This could potentially mean an end to attractive women advertising perfume, housewives in the kitchen or men doing DIY." Note the 'potentially'. It's all in the adverb :-).

This means there's nothing to worry about: tits and arse will continue to appear on European television sets, much to Sanity's viewing pleasure.

The only position I took on this, kitten, was to suggest that there would have to be some extremely insecure women over there pushing for this.

Read the full article... here's another quick excerpt;

quote:

Swedish MEP Eva-Britt Svensson urged Britain and other members to use existing equality, sexism and discrimination laws to control advertising.

She wants regulatory bodies set up to monitor ads and introduce a "zero-tolerance" policy against "sexist insults or degrading images".

Ms Svensson said: "Gender stereotyping in advertising straitjackets women, men, girls and boys by restricting individuals to predetermined and artificial roles that are often degrading, humiliating and dumbed down for both sexes."

She added: "Gender stereotyping in advertising is one of several factors that have a big influence in efforts to make society more gender equal.

I can only wonder what lies down the road for the EU with extreme Liberals like her assuming a level of power over it.

Your mind-reading skills need a lot of work, kitten! [;)]

Why don't you read the Council of Europe's resolution instead?

http://register.consilium.europa.eu/pdf/en/08/st09/st09671.en08.pdf

You will see that it's nothing with insecure women (what a sexist slant, Sanity! I am disappointed in you, after all the progress you had made in recent days, and the overwhelming support you gave to your vice president nominee).

I think what this MEP is trying to avoid is children growing up feeling they should be restricted to certain roles through the advertisements they see around them. I don't really understand what this has to do with her insecurity.

I always wanted to be a Cadburys flake or at least a part of me to be a errm Cadburys flake.

I almost said I wanted a small part of me to be one but that was far too modest and would have lead to people laughing at me..[:D]

Sanity -> RE: Europe EU wants to ban 'sexist' TV commercials? (9/6/2008 8:16:15 AM)

What is your opinion of  that. Should advertisers be disallowed from using sexual stereotypes? And thank you Richaerd, this is more along the lines of the discussion I was hoping to provoke.

Personally, I feel that sexual differences should be celebrated and that there is nothing wrong with a certain amount of "sexism" in society. Kitten might not like it... but, oh well.

I can only see this from the male point of view i.e. I grew up thinking to impress women I had to have an amazing body or be in the fire fighting profession. Obviously my fear of fires was greater than my lust of women.[8|]

I never thought anyone would respect me for having a mind and to a large extent that is true, not many do, partly because the majority have been brainwashed by society into valuing other things more. If you look at this from the female point of view it's far worse because as far as the media is concerned they all like having babies and baking cakes.

Lynx don't care if they can sell deodorant by implying spraying some on will turn you into a sex god that no woman can resist. Most will say that is just a bit of harmless fun advertising but the real message is far more insidious; ‘to have any chance with a woman buy our product because they are mindless animals deep down’. I don't see how you can police things like this, I just hope people see through it and impressionable minds are not exposed to too much of it.

Then again who is to say it’s wrong? Society is formed by such advertising and anyone has a free choice to opt out of buying it. It just means you’ll be going against popular culture until your viewpoint is realised by others and then you form another society which others will find fault in.

I hate thinking anyone watches advertising to find answers as to who they are but they do subconsciously and they will never realise the full extent of this until they’ve met someone who never had a TV or seen a billboard.

Here is the correct answer: the commissioners have no problem with straight bananas, it's the crooked ones they don't like so much, but they have never banned them. As Commission Regulation (EC) 2257/94 puts it, bananas must be "free from malformation or abnormal curvature". In the case of "Extra class" bananas, there is no wiggle room, but Class 1 bananas can have "slight defects of shape", and Class 2 bananas can have full-on "defects of shape".

I can only imagine why curved bananas might offend   [8|]
