ABC Reporter Arrested in Denver Taking Pictures of Senators, Big Donors

Asa Eslocker Was Investigating the Role of Lobbyists and Top Donors at the Convention

DENVER -- Police in Denver arrested an ABC News producer today as he and a camera crew were attempting to take pictures on a public sidewalk of Democratic senators and VIP donors leaving a private meeting at the Brown Palace Hotel.

Police on the scene refused to tell ABC lawyers the charges against the producer, Asa Eslocker, who works with the ABC News investigative unit.

(Click here to watch video of the arrest.)

A cigar-smoking Denver police sergeant, accompanied by a team of five other officers, first put his hands on Eslocker's neck, then twisted the producer's arm behind him to put on handcuffs.

A police official later told lawyers for ABC News that Eslocker is being charged with trespass, interference, and failure to follow a lawful order. He also said the arrest followed a signed complaint from the Brown Palace Hotel.

Shades of 1964 ("This is John Chancellor, somewhere in custody") and 1968 (Dan Rather: "Unless you intend to arrest me, don't push me").

On the bright side, maybe he can get some closeups of Gitmo West.

It seems I left out the juiciest part of the article;

quote:

During the arrest, one of the officers can be heard saying to Eslocker, "You're lucky I didn't knock the f..k out of you."

Hmm.

Tongue planted firmly in cheek....How racist can one get, the ABC network (Always Been Caucasian) targeting the Brown Palace Hotel?  They had  to be up to no good.  There could have been a vast right wing conspiracy had Hillary been involved.  For a while it was the Always Bashing Clinton Network.

I don't understand the problem here: a journo was being stupid and got arrested by the cops. Soooo???

Thadius -> RE: Politics Of Change? (8/28/2008 7:56:42 AM)

This reporting must be fictional, as there are not lobbyists involved with Democrats.  Somebody was obviously trying to create trouble, and that reporter should be held until they admit who they were working for.  I hope the cops did knock the shit out of him on the way to an undisclosed place. [8|]

Too over the top?

Didn't that journalist look vaguely Middle Eastern to you all?   Clearly a matter for Homeland Security[;)]

Thadius -> RE: Politics Of Change? (8/28/2008 7:59:41 AM)

Ah good point, that blonde hair could have been just a disguise.  I hope they get him for disrupting traffic and jay walking as well.

What's the voting trend for cops? Trying to find out online but there seems to be no analysis of the voter base for either the Dems or the Reps.

RIGHT - just keep moving along, there's nothing to see here, folks.

Close your eyes then. I have a spare blindfold, if ever you need one [8D].

The ABC team was covering the angle involving the alleged hypocrisy the Democratic elite was perpetrating with regards to alleged campaign finance reform. Those people caught on video were allegedly partaking in the very lobbyist campaign practices they supposedly were against.

Business/politics as usual in my mind. The politicians hate being outed like that and engage in whatever means they have at their disposal in attempts to keep their activities covered, including arresting some on a public sidewalk where the expectations of privacy are nil.

Oh yeah? Politicians can ask the cops to do their dirty work for them? Amazing. Doesn't bode well for civil liberties, does it?

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Trifling fluff, I realize, but there it is.

Maybe because the 800,000 police in America are:

A> spread out among race, SES, etc, and thus unlikely to vote as a bloc

and

B> aren't a large enough number to sway anything at the national level?

Sanity -> RE: Politics Of Change? (8/28/2008 8:17:47 AM)

You're flirting with me again, aren't you... [sm=pillowfight.gif]

You're so mischievous. So bad...

I don't think I'd trust you putting a blindfold on me. Or taking a swing at me with a "pillow" either.

You'd probably put rocks in it!

kittinSol -> RE: Politics Of Change? (8/28/2008 8:20:27 AM)

It's irrelevant to my question whether they can sway an election or not: I am interested in finding out whether the cops, as a profession, are more likely to vote one way or another. You seem to say they are equally spread out between the two main parties though, aren't you? That's all I wanted to know.

Alumbrado -> RE: Politics Of Change? (8/28/2008 8:21:45 AM)

You seem to be lying about what I said again, but how is that new?

800,000 isn't  a 'voter base' that either party is going to track by number because it is too small.

And 'spread out' may mean equally divided in your mind, but not everyone suffers from such simplistic problems in their perceptions.

That's such poor debating tactics, (insulting someone you're just having a discussion with), I shan't even bother reading you anymore: one gets tired of the fabrications after a while. Enjoy the antagonism.

It would depend on what city they are in, if they are unionized, etc...

The National Fraternal Order of Police, only claims 325k members.  So there is no way to say if they would go one way or another, at least in my opinion.
