Thanks for the links and personal memories guys.  The video visuals are working on my computer but not the sound.  One of my boys spent this afternoon trying to fix it.

Chicago is more of a kingdom?  In what ways, could you elaborate please, hunkboy.

I have learned more about the West Coast events during the Vietnam War Era, Berkeley protests, San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury, Santa Cruz as the hippy haven for every dreamy eyed flower child, Watts riots, LA riots, etc.

How about Seattle's WTO protests circa 1999?

Anyways, will have to do more searching on this tomorrow.  Time to pull out the horns and fangs for the party.

I'm confuzzled.  Wouldn't taking extreme steps to squash protest BE a repeat of '68???

Sans the nightsticks and dogs... oh and perhaps a few folks shot.

The nightsticks have been replaced with teargas balls for airguns and tasers.

THIS is it  'Polie Riot"       not protester riot

And if the protesters are peaceful, you can bet there will be Agent Provacateurs infiltrating them to stir up trouble.

St. Paul to purchase Tasers just in time for RNC

http://www.minnesotamonitor.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=3217

The St. Paul Police Department is requesting 230 Tasers to outfit the all of the department's officers with the electroshock weapon, Fox 9 News reports. The SPPD will purchase the Tasers with $210,000 collected from drug raids. The St. Paul City Council will have to approve the purchase.

The purchase is expected to arrive in St. Paul just in time for the Republican National Convention prompting media speculation that the weapons are being purchased specifically for the convention. When asked by Fox 9 News whether the police will use the weapon at the convention particularly against protesters, police spokester Tom Walsh said, "Our hope is that no one will have to use any degree of force. If it becomes necessary, will that be one of the tools available to them? I suppose that's safe to say."

the Daley clan not only has "the machine"(or clout) backing them but the unions, police and fire associations as well as a few Black politicals. it's the old "scratch my back and i'll scratch yours" thing when it comes to Chicago politics. but never ever cross him or it will likely end your career in this town.  he was challenged back in March of this year for re-election however there were too many Black challengers dividing the Black vote ...plus he was the projected winner by 7a.

Chicago politics are fun to watch - there's corruption in city hall yet (so far) nothing touches the mayor directly. he has dodged major scandals but able to maintain a united political front for the masses.  that's why he's working so hard to get the Olympics here for 2016.

Yeah fun to watch for sure.  [not fun to be in tho, hehe] I could tell early on that daley was lieing over the hired trucks.

Ild like to see Chicago get the olympics too.  I always wondered why they did not try sooner. The only thing is based on how China is now a glorified tecked out police state those same modes will be applied to Chicagoland.  ouch..

BTW- I finally live NOT in a "collar county"   oh I hated that term.  Well as it turns out Philadelphia has "collar counties" as well. gag me.   lol

He learned well from the old man, that you take your small piece of the pie, spread the rest around and don't ask for more.  That is where Byrne made her mistake, she demanded too much from the unions (namely those of the civil servants, police, fire, etc..) and when they didn't give in she gave it to them raw by mandating all employees must live within city limits.

If you want to see business being done you don't have to go far, just drop in at the Billy Goat, or the ward office on Halsted...  Most folks are to afraid of the consequences, or are getting a piece of the payouts (jobs, zoning, extra garbage pickups, etc...).

Just saying,
Thadius

P.S. these are not accusations, just assumptions of how things would be done...

P.S.S. Think anybody will believe the disclaimer?

October the 2016 location is announced.  Being the Obama is "from" Chicago .... maybe that will be the boost.  Daley says much of the needed infastructure is already there.

BTW the suburbs are almost as corrupt as the big city.

When ever I think life sucks here [rural PA] I talk to old friends who still live in Chicago, hearing bold problems - it is eye popping- and all business as usual there.

When visiting I see retirees working Walgreens.

Folks tend to live to an older age here-   in Chicago and many urban areas one has to work until they drop dead.   yikes.

Only Cicero... the rest aren't quite as corrupt.

What you guys are describing reminds me of Tammany Hall in New York City.

We have much smaller controversies here, like the Los Osos sewer project or dealing with the drunken frat boys and sorority sisters when they stumble from frat house to bar and back again.

(edited to add a thought)

96 might have been a calm year but the city was trying to redeem itself for the 68 fiasco (same Daley clan but different Daley as mayor). the city promised the DNC officials that it wouldn't be a repeat like 68 which is why they took extreme steps to squash protests/protestors. there was one protest on the 1st day of the convention that evaded the tight security but after that one, tighter security measures were enforced.

i'm scheduled to jet to the big dance (Dem Convention) but still deciding if i want to go.
Chicago 68 wasn't the fault of the protesters; it was a police riot pure and simple.
