It seems extreem.  1st protesters are not allowed to protest in public- or with in site, then the "holding pens",,,   this is "them" but when and how are 'we" so sure that "we' will never be "them"?    recall the coral technique used in New York.

Status: offline 		the coral technique was first used during the 96 Dem Convention held at Chicago. it's not much room for an entire group - so only 1 person is allowed to represent the group at a designated time. for example, if you're a PETA rep and scheduled to protest from 3:30p to 4:30p, that's your scheduled time.

the organizers liked Chicago's DNC's idea so much, they've adopted it for future conventions. most of the protests were limited to Grant Park under strict police surveillance too.

Status: offline 		96 was a calm year.  the economy - budget was good.

I think the coral task is not fair.  Mind you, I am all for law and order...but when too many are shut out for too long then I wonder.

I have no plan to protest the DNC.  I tend to put local politics as more pertinent to my life.

I seen vids on free speech tv, sorta like Indi productions as network tv doesnt cover it.... http://www.democracynow.org is a good source.  I dont cry over every little injustice.  

It perplexes me- that even tho I enjoy liberal ideas- that I live in a conservative town.  Even after mom moved out of state I wanted to stay.

When I worked for HR block years ago- people would roll their eyes over the $1 to the presdential campagine.

How ironic that the setting is Denver and the Democratic convention.

I am sure the Republican convention will have similar security arrangements in St Paul.  Any news if they will be similarly draconian?

Status: offline 		96 might have been a calm year but the city was trying to redeem itself for the 68 fiasco (same Daley clan but different Daley as mayor). the city promised the DNC officials that it wouldn't be a repeat like 68 which is why they took extreme steps to squash protests/protestors. there was one protest on the 1st day of the convention that evaded the tight security but after that one, tighter security measures were enforced.

i'm scheduled to jet to the big dance (Dem Convention) but still deciding if i want to go.

Tonya,  do you have any familliarity with Denver.  If you do go- study it - you know the map inside out. I doubt the hotel and the inside of the convention will be dangerous.  Just be careful en rout.

Status: offline 		I heard somewhere they will be shutting down I25 during some part of the convention.  It was on the news, but I don't know why, how, where, details or where to get the info.  Don't really care to find it actually, as I will be sticking close to home.

There are a lot of strange things in Denver... including the airport.  But that's another story.  I don't know where everything is in Denver as I avoid the area, but I find it interesting that this fenced in area is inside where no one can see anything that goes on there.  A lot of these human pens have been outdoors.  I haven't seen all of them, but that was just one of my thoughts.

If so, they are setting it up now, and, as in Denver, it can be identified, photographed, and talked about.

I have looked but have found no indication of any blog or other chatter about such a detention facility for the Republican convention.  Has anyone seen any such discussion?

I tend to believe something similar would be inline for St Paul--but what, where, and how does it compare to the facility being prepped in Denver?

Note to any planning protests in Denver or St Paul:  Make sure someone not there knows what you are doing, where you will be, what you are wearing, and establish a "safe call" time just as if you were meeting someone from online for the first time.  Make sure that person knows to go looking for you, and to not be slack about it.  Detention is dangerous, and any detention en masse is considerably more so.  The more people know your whereabouts the more difficult it will be for any police misconduct to be covered up.

Status: offline 		Oh, NOW you're bitching about a "free speech zone?" Where the hell was all this concern when Bush was herding protesters into pens during the run up to the Iraq quagmire? The protests then got so bad that eventually Bush had to give up speaking in front of real crowds, and now only speaks in front of trained crowds of military personel.

But you are probably right... the GOP protesters at the DNC will probably be far, far worse behaved. When you don't have ideas that can carry the day, when all the policies you supposedly stood for have done nothing but maim the country, then all you have left is political violence.

Status: offline 		Celtic has some good advice.    The tactic is to quell protests for the event - and worry about legal matter later.   Im sure the same thing will occur in MN, tho probaly not as vocal due to the dynamics of the party this time.

It isnt a wine and chease party being detained... after alot of walking- then to end up detained.... yikes.

I dont think it has to do with GOP - IMO they got stricter once WTO protests got big.

Status: offline 		GOP-ers wont BE the protesters at  Denver.......   it will be hillary enthusiasts.  you know 60 year old moms.  my mom, the neighbors mom, the PTA mom, the mom that bakes cookies, the mom that teaches Sunday school- then of course the pro-life people. ooops.

anyhow-  we do done gots da plan for dem mommas!!!!!     poor mom!

Status: offline 		oh  boy.   Now I recall mom covering my eyes during the news. I was 5 then.    A buddy of mine has been downtown as the riots broke out.  He evacuated ASAP.  [this is a bad ass then biker and druggie]

Allright but Chicago isnt a city in the normal sense it is more like a kingdom.   Tho we have war there isnt a draft...

Status: offline 		Fwiw, Maria Cino, Republican National Convention president and CEO told The Washington Post that the St. Paul police will be setting up "free speech zones" (read: corrals) during the convention.
