CallaFirestormBW -> Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/12/2008 3:39:09 PM)

Ok, here's my question. What are we entitled to by virtue of our being born?

Death. Everything in between is a bonus.

And here I was going to say Life.

We are not always entitled to death.  The laws against euthanasia come to mind.

It may depend on whose family you are born into.  I don't see Paris Hilton as being all that hot, her nose is pointy, she isnt that pretty, but she does know how to pose for pictures (all her pics look staged), it has got to help that she was born a Hilton.

I was peeking at your cheat sheet. You keep it on the inside of your thigh right? (Sorry - old Catholic HS flash back!)

You're entitled to the life that you choose to live.  No one on this planet can determine your destiny.  You can be born in the most repressive environment on Eath, but you can choose to rebel.  You don't have to live under any rules but your own.  Your life may be short, but it will be YOUR life.  Break rules, do what you want, and go to hell happy.

Gotta agree with this.

That being said, I will respect (and I am willing to take what reasonable actions are possible for me to insure that my fellow human beings do the same) the rights of individual human beings as they are defined by the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights as long as they demonstrate their willingness to do the same.  I hold that any right can be voluntarily waived by an informed and consenting adult only as it applies to themselves, and under the conditions they agree to.

I also hold opinions about what courtesies I would like to see extended and I am particular about two points:  1) Treatment of children - I think they all deserve to enter adulthood as free individuals endowed with equal rights and opportunites.  2) I value quality of life over quantity (lifespan)

Too true -- and the laws against suicide as well.

*Grins* Supposing that you are right, who would be responsible for providing these entitlements?

About the only thing i can think of is ...  air. I did think of food and water, but there are many that can't make the assumption that they are entitled to these things. Of course their lives tend to be short, or shortened.

Life is hard, and then you die.   [:(]

coupleowl -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/12/2008 5:53:42 PM)

We're not entitled to anything, we are either freely given or strive to achieve.

candystripper -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/12/2008 6:01:37 PM)

Well, I suppose it depends on the sense in which you use the phrase 'entitled'.  No one is logically assured very much of anything, even air, merely by dint of having been born *alive*.

On the other hand, I chose to view my fellow humans as worthy of fundamental dignity and respect as *humans* unless and until such time as they transgress (or achieve) in such a way as to alter or lose (or elevate) that status.

I think we are entitled to everything and anything we put the EFFORT into attaining, then, as some have said, we die

the natural flow of energy would direct that in my direction.

my toils would yeild some assets, which add to the tll- when combined with others whom added, then divided up, each participant would reap utopia as the needs among folks differ.

Once you are an adult, you earn everything you get- good, bad or indifferent.

krikket -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/12/2008 7:16:54 PM)

Okay, someone's gotta say it (lol):

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Death and taxes are unfortunatly not optional.

That's a technicality.  Wait long enough and it comes to everyone
