I'm reminded of Thomas Hobbes

The life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

I knew that Political Science degree would come in handy.

And here I was going to say Life.

We are not always entitled to death.  The laws against euthanasia come to mind.

That's a technicality.  Wait long enough and it comes to everyone

Death is an inevitability. But I am not entitled to choose when it comes.

FR

....define 'entitled'......

atursvcMaam -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/13/2008 9:59:19 AM)

Why do you feel that you are entitled to something for being born?  Pretty much everyone living on earth has accomplished that, haven't they?   ya wanna t-shirt that says "Now that i am safe i can be pro-choice" ???

CFB

Nothing.

I can't even say death because death is inevitable.

Life, choice, happiness, misery, etc, etc...none of that is guaranteed...which leaves...Nothing.

For me it's not about pro choice. It's that if someone made a choice to bring a baby into this world, that baby is entitled to being cared for until it can care for itself. I don't expect everyone to have this opinion, but it is my opinion.

aeriton -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/13/2008 5:07:55 PM)

Free will, but we are only entitled to what we earn.

Kana -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/13/2008 5:09:52 PM)

I am entitled to nothing by being born
Rawls would argue that we are
but I beg to differ
the onkly true thing I am entitled to
is to die
for are we not all born to die?

Vendaval -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/14/2008 2:30:35 AM)

One would hope for being cleaned up and given to your mother to start nursing, growing, developing, learning, loving and living.  But that is just the beginning stages of a human life.

General reply -

As my step-father used to say, we come into this world naked, bald, toothless, screaming and helpless.  If we manage to live long enough, we usually go out the same way.

It is hard for me to answer this question, because I want to know "Who or what is the person or being
that states that we are entitled to anything?"
I can only answer this question from a position of faith, I really could not answer it any other way.

I can't think of any mortal man that is capable of providing or giving us  whatever it is we should be entitled, to.
What mortal or human being is responsible for giving all the poor, destitute, disenfranchised and suffering people all the world "their entitlements"?
What I believe I am entitled to will not come from man, it will come from a much higher authority than man.   [;)]

a chunk of oxygen, that is all, fuck that up, you will be flying planeloads of rubber dogshit outta hong kong.

MzMia -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/14/2008 10:38:22 PM)

6, I don't even feel we are "entitled" to that.
Many die from oxygen deficiency {hypoxia},
and the quality of the air that we all breathe is declining.

It really would depend on what a persons definition of entitled to means. When I here entitlement it sorta infers a guarantee of sorts. Such as I'm entitled to clean air, would mean someone is guaranteeing me clean air, or that someone owes me clean air, same thing really. In the philosophical viewpoint of things, we should be entitled to all kinds of nice things, at least until we are sprouting pubes. I think it's pretty well agreed upon that children should be entitled to safety, love, food, and housing, however, none of that is guaranteed or even approaching any level of guarantee. So, if entitling anything is impossible then it is impossible for one to be entitled to anything really.

We as humans are still 90% animal, 10% evolution into something better, IMO. The animal part interferes with such concepts being brought forth into a more practical reality. Unfortunately, outside the fantasy land of philosophy and government, entitlements don't exist on this planet. If you were fortunate enough to be born into a loving, okay family, it was just a roll of the dice you weren't born to the crack head that forgot to feed you for a couple of days, or much worse. Now, one can think that a child is entitled even if they don't receive, however, one can not be entitled and simultaneously not receive,  it breaks the guarantee, and if the guarantee is not being upheld, it can't be an entitlement.
By that I mean, if one says children are entitled to food, and okay clothing to wear, yet you can go anywhere in this country and with little effort and a short drive see that lots of children go without. Then it is obvious there is no enforcement of the guarantee, and by consequence no entitlement to begin with. As in we as a society despite the talk do not actually guarantee anything really, even for kids. As it would be very easy to do away with many things I'm sure would show up on any entitlement list.

that was a GOOD line, wasn't it?

Kana -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/15/2008 5:56:26 AM)

I love that show.
It has more great quotable lines than anything else I have seen on TV with the possible exception of Seinfeld.

It don't hurt that I live smack dab where they shoot that show anyhow.

Bethnai -> RE: Entitlement -- Thought, Word, Deed (8/15/2008 8:17:01 AM)

I would also like to know that definition of entitlement.
