Some time ago, I was playing this computer game called Rome (or something like that...not the current game that's a war simulation game, but a game that was actually about the lifestyle of Rome). Anyway, the main character starts out as a slave who gains his freedom and then competes to become a leader of Rome. Well, I was having trouble with the beginning of the game (couldn't figure out how to get a towel for the "master" or whatever), so I finally gave up and called software support, figuring that everyone must be having this same problem cause it just didn't make any sense. So, I got customer support pretty fast, and it was a nice pleasant woman who asked me what the problem was. I explained where I was in the game, and then she said (obviously reading from a customer service card): "Okay, to start out, you're a slave." She said it quite bluntly, and my immediate response was, "um, okay. I'm a slave." There was a bit of a chuckle on the other end before she said in a very "interesting" voice. "Now, the goal of the game is rise above this, so you're going to have to actually want to do that." She kind of pegged me right then and there, so I just pretended not to understand the connection. I said I was having trouble finding the towel. She responded. "Well, it's not like you're going to be punished or anything if you don't find the towel." Right about then and there I started to wonder if this phone call had actually started with the numbers 900, or 976, but checked the numbers dialed, and yes, it was still product support. Anyway, she kind of played around a bit like this before she came around and told me how to find the item I was looking for. Her last line from the conversation was something along the lines of: "Remember, not everyone gets to be a leader of Rome. Some of you remain slaves for life." I told my bdsm friends about this, and suddenly everyone of them were having "difficulties" finding the towel and "needing" to call customer support. I don't think any of them actually got the person I did, so I believe my experience may have been unique. Anyway, not a story complaining about anything, which seems to be the norm here. Just thought I'd share it with you all.
