Why isn't Elvis on the list?

He saturated the market...probably had dozens of albums sell a million or 3, but few if any of them got up to 10 millions without being supplanted by his next one.

Well my next question would be, why is this only limited to pop and rock?  He did say in the article that this was based on American sales.  I can think of a several albums outside of those genres that should have made the list.

It wasn't...his original list of 71 had country, jazz, rap, folk, and R&B, as long as they sold 10 million or more.

Thanks everyone for throwing out your thoughts.  I was curious as to what others thought.  Special thanks to Alumbrado for clarifying the parameters of the search for the "top" 20 albums and a big  to Aileen for bringing that horrible picture back into my mind again.  Yikes!  'Night all...............luci

Not too bad a list, considering... I couldn't say that any of the totally suck. I'm not sure about factoring in Grammy's -- but it doesn't seem to have hurt the process.

( I would have left off Born in the USA, though -- People don't seem to 'Get It' and think it's some sort of Good Thing... )

This list reminds me that once upon a time Roseanne Barr had the most popular show on tv, and that illustrates that popularity does not make something good.

As far as I'm concerned the list was a joke the moment George Michael made it...

Here!  Here!

However, I've always thought that his song, "Father Figure," was the perfect theme song for daddy doms.

That is probably the worst "best of" list I've seen in awhile. Led Zeppelin is so overrated. Pink Floyd? I stopped listening to them when I stopped smoking weed, any band that you have to do drugs to appreciate, is not a good band. The only ones I agree with are Michael Jackson and Prince.

And right when I’m drinking my coffee!

Bad girl, Aileen!  Bad, bad Girl!

Just for that... twenty hard smacks with the paddle... And you’re spending the night in the cage!

On another note, could someone please explain to me why they pixilated her pussy out? What? Are they afraid they’re going to offend somebody?

Edited to add:  Consumption Junction?  Sounds like a Schoolhouse Rock video gone horrible wrong.

"Consumption Junction, what's you're function?"

Since it wasn't a 'best of' anything list, who cares?  It was a list of 'highest sales, and awards'  If you have proof that other bands sold more records, their sales value lasted longer and they got more Grammys and critical acclaim, post it.

I agree with you on how much that album sucked, Mike.  But you're older than I am, so I know you remember how popular it was.  LOL.  I also know that there are people on these boards that probably bought it.

I can see excluding greatest hits collections but I have never understood why lists such as this exclude live recordings. Adding weight based on Grammy counts is a bit of a farce. Didn't Jethro Tull win a Grammy once for best heavy metal album? Even basing it on sales dulls the edges a bit. I think Hootie and The Blowfish sold something like 15 million units of their first album. Nuff said. "Born In The USA" sounds like a collection of out-takes next to "Born To Run" - my pick for the finest pop/rock album of all time.

Just goes to show -- takes all kinds. I still love Zep and Floyd... and even have some Blue Oyster Cult on my "MyKink" playlist.

Michael Jackson, OTOH -- Ummm....  no.

Like I said, I agree with you on George Michael and Wham.  But everyone has a few songs they are embarrassed to admit that they like.  I can think of quite a few that I enjoyed privately that would have led to a serious ass-kicking had my buddies found out.
