No idea how much money is owed...but I do know Native Americans who do bank 10 grand a month for being born Native American.

I also know a couple of casino's where the land was "gifted" to them.  As well as a good chunk of building and getting things set up.

I'm going to have to research more into the Bureau of Indian Affairs and see what the deal is.

Some tribes have gotten very comfortable incomes from casinos but I've never heard of any where individual members were making 120k/year simply of the disbursement. I'd like to see a reference for that claim.

As if that would make a difference.

Actually, beth's old neighbor in Santa Maria was receiving more than $10/month; however, that's just her saying so.

Here's a reference saying that the amount in this case is $20k/month: The hundreds of people across the state who have lost their memberships in the tribes also have lost their share of the casino pie.

There are many news articles on the subject. It appears that money brings lawsuits. Again anecdotally per some people from beth's old neighborhood, this has created a major influx of people claiming Indian ancestry:

Tribal membership has been a heated issue at San Pasqual for years. But last month, about 50 members of the 300-member tribe were told they were suspended because an anthropological study had determined an ancestor was adopted; as a result, they weren't really Indians. The tribe is denying them tribal benefits, which include monthly casino-profit payments of nearly $4,000 each and, for some, housing and jobs. How the tribe's split up their money or determine tribal membership would seem to be their business.More power to them if they can make a buck off of the "greed " inherent in gamblers,as reparations for losing a way of life and a continent to European settler's this would seem agreeable ..is it not!

That is definitely surprising. Too bad my tribe doesn't operate a casino.

I will point out that this is a small tribe that operates a very successful casino. Most tribes aren't so fortunate.

Couldn't agree more - I think it is fantastic for them and for anyone to take advantage of the opportunity to be self sufficient and successful.
