Sanity -> Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 6:27:44 AM)

quote:

American history's "sad" aspects require action, the senator tells cheering journalists

"I personally would want to see our tragic history, or the tragic elements of our history, acknowledged," the Democratic presidential hopeful said.

"I consistently believe that when it comes to whether it's Native Americans or African-American issues or reparations, the most important thing for the U.S. government to do is not just offer words, but offer deeds."

I consistently believe that pandering to people's desire to be victims is politics of the most disgusting caliber.

housesub4you -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 6:52:21 AM)

Right and no one in the GOP is pandering

I oppose offshore drilling.......I support offshore drilling

No New Taxes!......I'm keeping everything on the table, including tax increases

My mistake, I was reading something else and posted here,

kittinSol -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 6:59:07 AM)

Yes, it would be so convenient to rewrite history and pretend the massacre of the native americans and slavery never existed. Then there would be no collective guilt to worry about... Sadly for you, some of us refuse to erase those pesky, ugly, inconvenient facts.

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 7:43:36 AM)

Please give me one example of a successful nominee for President who didn't "pander"during the election cycle. The very nature of the process leads to this and you know it.One does not get elected in this country by telling people that their difficulty's are of their own making and their government does not care and will not help. What exactly is McCain's sudden desire to drill for oil anywhere and everywhere if not "pandering",certainly not an actual policy to bring down gas prices, this is nothing more than campaign rhetoric and both sides do it....though it would seem you only get indignant when it comes from the Democratic side.

kittinSol -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 8:06:20 AM)

Huh... nevermind [:D] .

Thadius -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 8:19:49 AM)

I completely agree with you about both sides pandering, it happens every election cycle.

However, on the oil drilling... I can say I have changed my mind on it as well.  At $2 a gallon of gas, I wasn't all that worried about drilling, now at $4 a gallon I want to know how much and how fast can they do it.  You know what I mean.  I do agree with McCain on this one, it should be a state's right to decide if they wish to drill or not.

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 9:14:41 AM)

Not sure any amount of drilling will bring back the $2.00 gallon, and certainly any positive effect would not be seen for years possibly a decade.Would not that time and money be better spent persuing alternatives to oil, renewable non polluting sources of energy are the answer to rising oip prices. Not befouling more of the planet and investing more resources in yesterday's technology...Time to invest in the technology of the future rather than the past.
A conversation for another thread I think, this one it would seem is to be dedicated to two misconceptions ..the first being that the press fawns all over Obama, the so called media bias, the second being that Democrats pander while Republicans  exhibit leadership...both of these would seem empty and hollow on the face of it...but have at it...and enjoy. For myself November can't get hear soon enough(let's not evn think how much more damage can be done before Jan21st)

I didnt know our past wasnt acknowldged. I learned about the indians and slavery in elementary school.

I learned how the southern democrats formed the KKK in order to kick out the 'carpetbaging' northern GOP and end reconstruction.

I would have a hard time finding any American that doesnt 'acknowldge' slavery. Now Europe likes to pretend they were all goody goody gumdrops, but 70 years ago you would have been crazy to suggest all of Euopre would ever get along.

I think this goes along with why Michele was never proud of her country until her husband was stealing caucuses.

But he said reparations so now maybe Rev ackson wont want to cut his balls off.
lol

I would suggest to you that you forget most of what you were "taught"in elementry school, and try to learn a little bit more about your country than the claptrap deemed acceptable to teach a 10 y/o...but thats just me

kittinSol -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 9:51:55 AM)

The man with the hidden penis is basically saying that a) the KKK was really an honourable thing and b) that we have to forget about history, since he learnt 'it' (or a seriously questionable aspect of 'it') at elementary school [8|] .

.......speaking as a european i personally know no-one who would argue that we're all goody goody gumdrops. Concersely, where i think Europe does have an edge over the US is in the area of admitting we have homicidal tendencies.
Europe knows that, left to themselves, European countries have a habit of warfare. We're all so close together, it's like an historical sequence of fights over the fence and what their Kevin said about our Doreen.
Acknowledging that, keeping it in consciousness, is the only reliable way to prevent it happening again.

Kittin can you imagine for a moment growing up and still beleiving all you were taught as a child ,with no curiousity to delve deeper or to question that which you were taught...if it were me it wouldn't be my penis I was hiding!

So, what exactly is a "deed?"  I've not seen this quote before.  Is it offering every Native American 10,000 a month because they were born Native American?
Something like that?  Trying to understand here..can anyone explain it to me?

Investigate the National Petroleum Reserve Alaska and then tell me if you're still sure that the oil companies are really telling the truth about ANWR or offshore drilling.

It could be something as basic as straightening out the mess at the BIA and getting the money already owed to the Native American's to them. But it will hopefully be something.

slvemike4u -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 10:44:49 AM)

My stars next we'll be asking Japan to acknowledge the existence of "slave"brothels during world war 2....where will this honest approach lead us I wonder, hopefully to a point where the KKK isn't some local Rotary club with benign intentions....

sub4hire -> RE: Obama Addresses "Cheering Journalists" (7/30/2008 10:49:19 AM)

No idea how much money is owed...but I do know Native Americans who do bank 10 grand a month for being born Native American.

I also know a couple of casino's where the land was "gifted" to them.  As well as a good chunk of building and getting things set up.

I'm going to have to research more into the Bureau of Indian Affairs and see what the deal is.

Some tribes have gotten very comfortable incomes from casinos but I've never heard of any where individual members were making 120k/year simply of the disbursement. I'd like to see a reference for that claim.
