Besides the miracle of just being alive... I found this part interesting.

"He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest,"

How the hell was he driving... and then able to resist arrest.  He should have been at least in a coma, I hope they did a proper blood test to confirm.

Barfing on the cops while they yell at you to get out of the car will draw a resisting charge in some places...

i used to work at a Detox Unit & it was fairly common for the guys to have a blood alcohol level of .4 & above & be walking around & talking...this is an acual blood sample reading, not a breathalizer...an alcoholic builds a physical tolerance to the stuff & some can drink an amazing amount of alcohol & still function...in my heyday, i could put away a fifth of hard booze & a half to full gallon of wine in a day & go to work...it did help that i worked in a bar...LOL

How about a MRI of his liver? So not a pretty sight...

Identifying and handling alcohol poisoning -

" Assessing the Intoxicated Person "
  • Count respirations, or how many times the person breaths in one full minute. If the person is breathing less than twelve times per minute or stops breathing for periods of ten seconds or more, CALL 911 .

  • Try to wake the person if they appear to be asleep. If you can not wake the person, CALL 911 .

  • Look at the person’s skin. If it is cold, pale, bluish in color, or sweaty, CALL 911.

  • Stay with the person who is vomiting! Try to keep the person sitting up, if they must lay down, keep them on their side with their head turned to the side. Watch for choking, if the person begins to choke, GET HELP IMMEDIATELY .

  • Do not attempt to give the person food if they can not get it themselves. Giving the semiconscious person food could cause vomiting, choking, or aspiration.

  • If you cannot keep the person awake, position them on their side in a fetal position. Place a pillow in the small of their back to prevent them from rolling out of this position. This is important to help prevent aspiration if the person should vomit. STAY WITH THE PERSON and wake them up frequently. Just because the person is sleeping doesn’t mean that the alcohol cannot get to the brain. Alcohol levels continue to rise, causing the person to become unconscious, rather than asleep. If at any time you can not wake the person up, CALL 911 .

That's a pretty good record. Actually I think it should get him into Guiness. My family's top score was 0.353 and we a,,,were pros. Most people are passed out by then. My record is 0.254, and I will admit fully that I should not have been out there and I am not whining about it. What I mean is that I'm glad I didn't hurt somebody, because I did get into a wreck. Live and learn, lose, pay the fines too, and I am surprised that I never got sued by that golf course I parked the van in, by sliding into it on it's side.

Actually if the guy with the 0.491 could walk and talk at all he is a pro. He is never going to quit. With enough jail and fines you might get him to not drink and drive, even stay sober enough to drive to work and back,  but you will never get him to quit without throwing him in prison for life.

The only thing that could happen to me that would even have a prayer of getting me to quit completely would be to have a kid. And that ain't happenin. No matter what people say, once an addict, all you can do is stop. You can stop all week and just drink or whatever on the weekends. You can turn it into an occasional thing.

And I know there is someone here who has stopped, and I mean for many years, but that is still only stopping. It is not quitting.

It is the same with any drug, alcohol is but one of many these days. Even the cigarette in my hand.

But a 0.491 ? That is almost worth it just to set the record. That guy had to be pickled, I don't even want to think about it and I certainly don't want to go there.

I remember a story, probably researchable on the net, this college kid died in Mexico. He got robbed and the robbers made him drink a whole bottle of booze. He died from alcohol poisoning, which is why it made any kind of news.

So tolerance is obviously a factor, and actually I would like to know where the guy got enough money to, over the years acclimate his body to tolerate this level. If he could even drive a car at all that is phenomal. That is a hell of alot of alcohol. I kinda wonder what his O2 count was. I could see them pronouncing him dead and him yelling "I ain't fucking dead".

Be interesting to know if that really is a record. And no I won't try to break it. Have to check other countries, possibly do a little math to convert the number. I wonder if Guiness is doing that right now.

Did the cops sedate him, or the hospital? I thought it said the hospital, and just wrote HM a question asking how they could possibly do this.
Usually even when someone has been in a car accident, if they have been drinking the hospital refuses even pain killers. (sometimes I think they enjoy this)

I can't believe someone could have such a high reading.
    It's incomprehensible.

My record is just slightly above .4 and I could move from place to place with great effort.  I really wouldn't call it walking.

Try having to medically take care of a .431 for 12+ hours and that person was not your only medically unstable patient....she did not know she should be dead yet either.

See and this is why I stopped drinking. When a BAL becomes a Scoring Chart, the addict in me starts training.

"So, here he is, the BAL Kid with an amazing Blood Alcohol Level of 0.531. How did you do it"

"Well Howard, I started by doing a few Keg Stands and Shotguning a few Steele Reserves before truning to the Gin and Tonic, Eventually I realized I was just taking in too much watter and went straight for the everclear and was pounding it like Koolaid....... now if you'll excuse me Howard I think I'm having a liver Failure"

"Well you did it Steel, What are you going to do now"

    "I'm Going to Detox!!!!!!"

LOL, .491.  Okay, I admit, I have a very high tolerance.  But, I NEVER drink and drive, period.  However... .491... damn.  I couldn't drive, even if I could FIND the car, which, at that point, I sincerely doubt I could.

Yeah they don't usually.  My little brother had to go into the hospital for stitches twice when he was drunk.  Once he got kicked out of a party, and this guy was talking smack to him through a window.  So he punched through the window, and cut his arm up.  I had to go down to the hospital where the cops took him.  They had him in restraints, and they were sewing his arm up with no anathestic.  He was screaming like a mad man.

The other time he got stabbed in the shoulder with a 4 inch knife by a girl.  He was fighting, and the little bitch came up from behind him and stuck him.  She missed his lung by a quarter of an inch.   Someone took him to the hospital and said he fell through a window.  Of course the nurses knew that was bullshit, and they were going to call the cops.  But I got down there and managed to talk them out of it.  He blew a .34, and they wouldn't give him any anathestics.  So he got sewn up again kicking and screaming.
