Vendaval -> RE: Do You Believe In Ghosts? (7/20/2008 11:35:44 PM)

I have a fondness for and the habit of living in old houses.  Certain spirits were present at various homes and some would go so far as to move objects and make sounds for attention.  Sometimes there would be a change in temperature, as in being very cold.  Friends and guests who knew nothing of the activities would invariably describe the same sort of image and impression about the spirit, ghost, energy, etc.  And this would be without any psychoactive substances other than caffeine and nicotine.

What are these ghost or spirits?  The answer depends on your worldview and personal mythology.  Some say they are impressions from events where much emotion was released, some say the dead that are not resting, some think angels or demons, etc.

omg, Vendaval, please don't say that!  [:(]  i get so easily freaked out by things like that! which is why i AVOID older houses/apartments!

I have seen, heard and felt ghosts and spirits.  I have been in buildings where they would interact with you.  I even worked security in a building where the elevators would follow you when everyone else went home.  And, since I was security, I can tell you that there was no basement control panel for someone to make it happen.   That building was full of unexplained things.  After a bit of research, we found that someone had died there in a horrible accident.  I believe that one of the previous owners had suffered a heart attack there as well.

angelspassion4u -> RE: Do You Believe In Ghosts? (7/21/2008 1:48:03 PM)

I believe in spirits.  When I was younger I lived with a mischievous one who use to switch the pictures on the walls or knocked books on the floor while we slept.  One night when I was young  I woke up to my uncle ( who was in the hospital hundred of miles away) sitting on the end of my bed. He came to say good bye and that he loved me. He disappeared and I went back to sleep. When I woke up in the morning, we got the phone call that he had passed away during the night.  I was thankful for this goodbye.

When my oldest son was around 2 years of age he came out one morning telling us saw an angel  during the night. He, at that point in his life, knew nothing about angels or what they were.

I have had enough evidence during my lifetime to know that there are spirits both good and bad.

I agree... I have seen and heard numerous things throughout my life, as well as had family members very involved with Wicca-type things, so spirits are not an "unnatural" thing to me.. Just neighbors we don't see all the time ;-)

PanthersMom -> RE: Do You Believe In Ghosts? (7/21/2008 2:03:28 PM)

lived in a house where someone committed suicide from what we eventually learned.  the boxes in the attic would move at night.  there were certain areas in the house that had a definite bad energy, bad enough that my father decided the day we were moving out that he wasn't going in there another step, whatever was in there could stay!  and this was a guy who was a cop in a rough urban neighborhood for 32 years!  smelling perfume nobody used and hearing a female vioce call me when i was home alone washing dishes, yeah, that pretty well clinched it for me.

Ghosts, vampires, werewolves, zombies, dragons, unicorns, fairies, gnomes, demons, sprites, reptilian aliens living in caves, etc, etc do not exist anywhere except in people's imaginations.

No Christine, it doesn't make you retarded or idiotic.  It makes you superstitious.  I would like to see a ghost or a UFO, but I haven't.  I have seen absolutely no proof that they exist.  I think everyone has some place in the town they grew up in that was supposedly haunted.  We had a abandoned hospital that was supposed to have been.  So like every other teenager in town, I went there with buddies and we poked around.  We didn't see any ghosts, and we were high as kites LOL.

So because you have no proof that any of these exist. that means the don't? And we are just supposed to take your word for it? Yea right.

Lynnxz -> RE: Do You Believe In Ghosts? (7/21/2008 2:07:05 PM)

I believe in zombies, and that they are in charge of baggage handling on airlines.

yes..i see and hear dead people all the time....

So who are these dead people you see?
Do you see them everywhere? Or just in certain places?
Do they talk to you, or want something?

Yes, and do they know they are dead?

Vendaval -> RE: Do You Believe In Ghosts? (7/21/2008 3:36:59 PM)

No need to worry, shiazn.  Most spirits hanging out in a place leave the living alone.  I always give a friendly greeting and a live and let live prayer when entering a new space.  We also cleanse the space by burning sacred herbs such as sweet grass and white sage, forming a circle and praying for the home to be peaceful and happy.

I never had any direct problems other than some mischievous moving of objects.

You can keep candles, sacred stones, crosses, holy water or whatever you feel will protect you around.  You can also burn sacred herbs and scatter rock salt around the perimeter of a place for extra protection.  I like to light candles and put on some mellow music to before going to bed too.  Remember to keep the candles on sturdy surfaces free of flammable materials and blow them out before actually going to sleep.

Well, I've seen a ghost.  So yes I do believe in them.  The one I saw never spoke, but it did appear to both me and my mother while we were 1200 miles apart.  It woke me out of a sound sleep by jumping on my back.

As to the several questions you posed, most I do not know the answer to.  I don't seek out ghosts or wish to know of them.

Please supply more information about this event. What was its mass? Did it land feet first on your back? Was there a smell? Did you sleep on your belly? Was the window open? Was the door closed? Why did it jump on your back? What did you see exactly?

Well since the Wiccan religion is only about 60 years old, I recon these spirits have all passed on in the last 60 years.

Yeah actually, I am under no obligation to prove the non-existence of legends and myths.  If you believe in them, than you're the one that has the responsiblity to prove it.  I'm sorry, but that's how the scientific method works.

Oh, now you're going to bring reality into it, eh? [8D] One would think that, out of the billyuns and billyuns of sightings there would be ONE verifiable occurance. But noooooooo... we just have to take their word for it and if we want them to prove it we're being big meanies. Hahahaha yeah, right.

And UFOs? Hahahahahaha

Ghosts...

Some people believe, some don't.  If you do believe in ghosts, what laws of the netherworld do you ascribe to?

This is all speculation for entertainment purposes, but I had some thoughts.

Can ghosts be measured by any early machine?
Can ghosts interact with tangible things in our world?
Can anyone see ghosts?
Can ghosts physically harm humans?
Are there ghosts of other animals (other than humans)?
Does someone have to be dead to be a ghost?
Can ghosts travel great distances?
Do ghosts have affect any other sense than sight? (Can they be heard, smelled, tasted (RAWR!))
Do ghosts speak?
Do ghosts inhabit electrical devices?
Can ghosts be contained?

I think it would be fun to talk about this... Then later vampires, werewolves, and zombies.

Yes, I believe in ghosts.  I believe in varying aspects supernatural.  I also believe there is a perfectly logical explanation for anything paranormal.  Some of it we can disprove, and some we simply can't explain in scientific terms... yet.  Keep in mind that all paranormal really denotes is that it is out of the average scope.  It doesn't mean this isn't scientific phenomena, it simply means we can't explain or properly document it yet.

I run a paranormal investigation team in my area.  Part of my goal is to catch evidence that can either disprove or prove a haunting.  However, skeptics will always hold fast to their disbelief and believers their belief.  People see what they want to see.  I simply try to keep an open mind to the possiblity that maybe, just maybe, we humans in our endless hubris haven't come up with scientific data or explanations for every being, entity, energy or phenomena out there.  That doesn't mean that every time my EMF detector bleeps or someone has an experience it's necessarily paranormal, it just means it's a possibility.

Why, exactly, is that?  A spirit has to have passed in the time since a religion was founded for a follower of said religion to be sensitive to its presence?

Science has proven to be of immense benefit to the world....hell, we all wouldnt be on here if it werent for science. But at the same time....comments such as this seem to me to display the inherent arrogance that comes with science and the stereotypical western viewpoint. You have phenomena which have been transcribed orally as well as in documents by VARIOUS cultures; not just one or two; and suddenly scientific skepticism makes ALL of these null and void? Like I mentioned before....science has seemed to become so many people's religion.
