This isn't meant to be a hardcore rant or a bitchfest, but rather somewhat lighthearted.

But...as someone who has been a patron of the BDSM part of these boards for about 2 years now, I have to say that as of late, I am finding it harder and harder to find a thread worth dignifying with a serious response.

It might be me. Maybe I have just heard all the same discussions a few too many time and am reaching the point where there just isn't anything all that interesting to discuss anymore.

But...I have to admit...it is somewhat disheartening when I go out of my way to try and start a few threads that require some thinking and receive very few responses and then start one thread about cumshots that goes on for 5 pages...

It seems to me that the river of intellectual discourse is drying up and being replaced with a black swamp of inconcievable idiocy, silliness, insults, and just utterly pointless banter.

Not pointing fingers or placing blame. I'm just as guilty as anyone in not taking the higher road and trying to preserve some degree of integrity in the discussions.

But...anyone else think that lately this less of a place for discussion and more of a circus sideshow?

Just curious for other opinions.

I have noticed the same trend and find it disturbing.

Give it until fall semester starts back up, and see how many of the sideshow OPs drop off.

i'm not above derailing idiotic threads in the direction of pointless banter, so i must fess up. but in general, yeah...i'm not sure if it's collarme, or that i've been here for awhile now, or just the ebb and flow of things, but there's rarely a thread that really makes me think or want to be involved anymore.

B.com went on a downhill slide after Various bought Aiken out. Now Penthouse owns it and some of the more intelligent posters are drifting back, along with a few of the lunatic fringe (you know, threads like "SSC decapitation?" or "No indoor toilets in Communist England", shit like that). On another pervy site I read an amazingly well-written and well-researched thread on the History of the US Empire.

For quite some time I was under the impression that citations and links to non-blog source materiel here were against the TOS.

So, Michelle Obama vs Cindy McCain, nude jello wrestling: Who would win?

I've noticed it too.  But then again, Michael has been very busy this summer!

cindy mccain, she looks like she could freeze the jello with a look in a split second and immobilize her opponent.  and in regards to the OP, yeah, hijacks into levity and absurdity seem to be more commonplace these days.  maybe it's just some things have been over-posted to the point where we all just don't give a damn.

I don't know if it is seeing the same thing over and over again, or more that some folks  ask in a way that almost says please make a funny reply.  Certainly, there are some topics that come up in cycles, but if a person is asking in a thoughtful way, I do my best to answer it with an honest response even if I have replied to 200 threads just like it.  Or one could always do like the lovely LuckyAlbatross and provide links to the other threads...

Nah, you're not alone. I'm seeing it too...and I've seen it before...and before that too. It seems to cycle. Right now you have to dig pretty deep.

And that's a good chunk of the problem.  What could be an interesting topic, what could be dragged by its bootstraps into something decent, gets hijacked by (self-censored) who think they are being cute.

Great example would be the topic Gris posted a couple weeks back on terraforming.  First reply was someone who didn't find it personally compelling shrieking "URANUS!!!    Hehehehehe!!!!"

There is a whole section for Random Stupidity, it shouldn't be the whole board.  And who the fuck declared you the arbiter of what is idiotic?  Please answer that, Anna.  I'm not being rhetorical.

Do you mean specifically the BDSM section here or all the sections of the boards?  I rarely post in the BDSM section, because I find and have always found  most of the discussions pointless.  I simply don't see the point in debating with someone over what are personal choices in regards to their sexuality and lifestyle.  However, some posters in that particular section appoint themselves the experts on everything BDSM.  It's just not that important to me.

As for the other sections, I don't see any trends.  I used post in B.com as well, and I see the same thing here that I saw there.  People come and go.  We are here recreationally, and I don't get my panties in a twist if someone says something crude or sophmoric.

It isn't just you, MR.  While it isn't really a bad thing that I spend less time in the forums, I find less intellectually stimulating threads worth posting in.  Firm pretty much stopped even looking through the BDSM forums ages ago too... I think he only goes there anymore only to read comments that I make.

It ebbs and flows, although I find this annoying, too.  I usually just skip over the pages of banter to try to find something meaningful.  But sometimes there are good posts hidden in between the chatter.

Ah well, what can ya do?

It happens. Happens to all forums regardless of topic. It's actually a fairly good thing it does too. Forums completely bereft of it during the ebb times tend to die.

I haven't been here on these particular forums long enough to notice that, but, it does seem that we have the same problem here as on all other forums.  One person pops in and says something rude and instead of just ignoring his/her post as would be prudent, it erupts into a flame war, which is precisely what the first jerk/ette wanted to begin with, thus fueling them and making them spread throughout all the boards.

~fast reply~

Perhaps it's because it's summertime and folks are in a more light-hearted mood than at other times during the year. I'm sure I have participated in tearing down some of the more "thoughtful" threads (we've all done it - not pointing fingers but recent examples do come to mind - each of us at times failing to see the "seriousness" of the topic, the thread, or really just tossing out a goofy answer to blow off some steam).

This summer session I'm taking a class that's incredibly tough and I've been so stressed that I cry over the material every single week and nearly puke every Wednesday night, knowing an exam is coming Thursday; so when I'm here, it's usually just to waste time, de-stress, and be silly. It's a message board, after all, not the halls of Congress. Skip the posts that offend your sensibilities.

Just taking the OP's comment out a lot, i've noticed on the TV / Radio news and print media, even the Broad sheets.

Regardless of the topic there doesn't seem to be any real analysis of anything at the layman's level anymore ...

In Australia, we have a national broadcaster for TV and Radio, (kinda like the BBC) and they have dropped their standards enormously.  They used to do stories/programs on stuff i didn't understand nor was i interested in it, but they got me in ... now it seems to be almost sound bites or surface stuff.

Any comment about a minority attracts comments of bias, either for or against, or the expression of a point of view and your told 'you're wrong' but no reasoned argument is provided to back up such a broad sweeping statement!

sorry ... i've got to stop stepping up to the soap box ... my health doesn't like it!

Mod 11 hs seen to it that derailing has been kept to a minimum. Insults too. Unless of course you are talking about the threads in "Random stupidity" where we are allowed to be as idiotic as we want.

If you dont like a thread or you find it too silly, you can stay away from posting on it. Even I post less due to silliness.

Yep I add my vote for internet forums having cycles and this seeming to be one of the less rivetting times.  Interestingly I am on a music forum and at the moment a lot of the people there seem very weird at the moment so I wonder if we are having an extra long and potent full moon?!!
